Desktop Icons

Everytime my laptop re-boots desktop icons appear despite the fact that I have unchecked the "display desktop icons" option.

On any of my previous laptops/notebooks once I had unchecked that option I was never bothered by desktop icons again but now the Recycle Bin, ASUS Tools and whatever new programmes I have installed are shown.

How do I permanently prevent desktop icons and gadgets appearing at start-up?

You might see if using the REG files in Method Two of OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to hide the desktop icons may be able to help. It does a bit more of a thorough job than just unchecking the "display desktop icons" option alone.

Thanks for that Shawn. I had wondered if that might work and I've just given it a try but it hasn't solved the problem. In fact, when I re-started my laptop the icon for the .reg file appeared!

I am able to stop icons appearing by deleting the short cuts that are already on my desktop and choosing not to install shortcuts for new programmes. I was able to stop the recycle bin appearing by unchecking it from a list of items I came across.

So, at the moment I only get an ASUS Tools icon appearing.

Icons appearing on my desktop isn't a huge problem but I did wonder why they were so simple to banish from the desktops of numerous other laptops and notebooks, including ASUS models, I've used but impossible to remove from my current ASUS laptop.

(Off topic I know but another weird little thing is that on all my other laptops and notebooks .pdf file icons have had a thumbnail of whatever the front page of the .pdf was but on my current laptop all I get is the Adobe logo. I've got two laptops in front of me running the same OS with exactly the same settings yet one has the thumbnail and one doesn't).

As a test, create a new administrator account, and see if desktop icons will stay hidden in that account.

I find that the thumbnail previews (if turned on) for .pdf files to be sketchy. Sometimes they will only display after you have opened the file. Sometimes they will just not display at all, and only show the Adobe logo.
