Solved Desktop Icons

While attempting to get Calendar Creator V-12 to run successfully on Win-7, I selected the desktop icon properties, and on the Compatibility tab, I selected to run in Win XP. When I did that, an overlay (looks like a generic file) appeared on all of my desktop icons! (Except the trash can and Windows Explorer)

Nothing I have done, to include removing the Calendar Creator program and restoring the computer to a previous date has removed these overlays from my desktop. Can you help?

If you look closely, the icon associated with the application is there, it's just that an overlay is on top of it.

I guess you have to backpaddle from what you did with Calendar Creator V-12 or ask the owners of that program what you can do. It is apparently some overlay that they created.

Can you go back to the Desktop icon properties and remove the compatibility for XP? You have w7 so having a system folder in XP mode can mess things up.

You might try...
...creating a system restore point
...opening regedit
...navigating to here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

...and deleting all but the default entries shown below:



Then restart the computer.

Thanks - it was already set at (Default)

Any other ideas? I replaced the file IconCache.db with the file of the same name from my laptop, but it had no effect!?!

No need to replace the IconCache.db, just delete it...
...then restart the computer and IconCache.db will be rebuilt.
(but you probably tried that from post #2.)

Like all Shell extension handlers, icon handlers are in-process Component Object Model (COM) objects implemented as DLLs.

A little further down on that website - you should see info about the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry area. Maybe take a look in the key for the html extension.

What if you delete those icons and create new ones.

Did that I even uninstalled two applications, re-booted the PC and then reinstalled the apps - no change!

I'm convinced the problem lies with a setting in the registry, but I'm reluctant to poke around in there - I did edit the settings in IsShortcut but that did not resolve the issue.

The applications run when I click on the icon - it's just that there is another graphic super-imposed on top of the application icon.
