I have an issue with internet explorer on a 64-bit system. basically there are certain websites requiring popups that will only work on 64-bit IE9, but if i drag a link to these sites onto the desktop so the user can click on them directly they default to 32-bit IE9 and not 64-bit.

i have tried using the properties tab and open with and pointing that at the 64-bit executable, but even though it says its doing that, its still defaulting to opening the site in 32-bit

its very frustrating!

any advice much appreciated

thanks

Ben

It could well be that the pop-ups need Adobe Flash, which is problematic in IE9 x64 as we're still waiting for Adobe to give us a 64-bit version of Flash for the browser, so that probably explains why the pop-ups are defaulting to the 32-bit version.

Adobe have released a beta version of Flash for IE9, but it will need to be uninstalled if and when they get their act together and produce an RTM version.

i already have the beta flash installed and it seems to work fine, and if you open 64-bit ie9 first then use the website with the popups it all works fine, staying in 64bit, its only a seperatley created desktop shortcut to a specific website thats causing the 32-bit default

oh and even more weirdly, if 64-bit is already open the desktop shortcuts will default to the open 64-bit version!

i will try the method suggested by Brink and report back

thanks Guys

That's because the shell calls CreateProcess on the URL, which (by default) will look for a running iexplore.exe process to launch in first. If a 64bit process already exists, they'll go there, otherwise they go to the default URL handler (which will be 32bit IE).
