Your OS is XP? Then I'm not surprised sleep doesn't work. Otherwise check your BIOS and update all your drivers and firmware.

Welcome

Hopefully the solution will be found in this fine tutorial.

Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems - Vista Forums
Works with windows 7, too.

If the solution is not in the tutorial, you may want to try a system restore, since you mentioned that the problem started after you made changes or after the updates.

I just started having problems putting my computer to sleep a couple days ago. I don't recall doing a Windows 7 update before my problem began. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, the screen goes black and it is locked up - the mouse and keyboard do not work - but the computer is still running and the power light is blinking.

I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. When I later turn it back on, I get the "windows did not shut down properly" screen and choose to start windows normally... similar to post-blue screen crash.

I previously had problems with windows waking up from sleep on its own, but I think I have solved that issue.

I still have occasional Blue Screen crashes, but I disabled Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter today, so I am hoping that will help. I don't have a home network and when I ran the system diagnostics I received two warnings about that. (Seems to be a driver problem.)

I like Windows 7 when it's working properly... but I never had all these problems with XP... and I had XP with its earliest release.
