Solved Desktop problems- no right click action

Reviewed old threads, checked virus and registry errors. Problem unresolved:


No right-click or double-click action on descktop icons. Left -click 'Open' works OK. Sometimes app will lockup and red-X Close tab is greyed. I can fix the Close tab by going to task manager and come back out without taking any action in taskmanager.

Problem started several week ago and is getting progressively worse. Tried Restoring to previous version without success.

Running AVG Internet Security 2011 and AVG PC Tuneup. Tuneup consistently shows 114 registry errors it can't fix....running programs,etc.

Googled 'false desktops' as suggested no Joy!

Thanks... Malware found infection and repaired, but problem persists... no double-click on desktop icons, no drap & drop in apps, no hotspots in apps either. Any further suggestions?

OK now try this:
Download and install ccleaner. Use the [FONT=inherit !important]registry [/FONT]tool to scan and repair all issues. You may need to run this several times to resolve all the issues.

You probably got this registry problem by running registry Tune Up programs and I don't thing you will fix them with another registry cleaning tool. A repair and install or a clean install is probably your only options.

Cleanup didn't work. Before i do a repair install (ugh!), should I try a System Restore (WIN 7) including System Image? It would take me back well before 'the troubles'.

What do you mean with Left -click 'Open' works OK? Left click should by default not bring up any menus.

If left click brings up a context menu with Open and other options, then you have reversed button functions, left button acting as right button and vice versa. If this is the case does the right double click open files / apps?

If a single left click opens context menu and a single right click does nothing, the button functions are reversed. So back to my question: does a single left click open context menu?

A single left click opens the context menu. Double click ( which should open the file) does nothing. The right click button does nothing. I think this is symptomatic of the larger problem of corrupted registry.

Then the button functions are reversed. Have you checked that in CP? See here:

As I have been trying to tell, the only way for the left button to open a context menu is that the button functions are reversed, but the OP seems to have some difficulties to believe that, refusing to check the settings.

I bet the double RIGHT click opens files and apps.

I use a MS K350 wireless mouse. I have confirmed using the default button settings. No double click funtion on left button and no right click funtion at all. No drag and drop anywhere and no submenu hot spots,e.g. scoll over 'hotspots in programs/ dropdowns do not highlight or underline for action.

On startup, get computer library page with old incompatible program as sole listing. Uninstall option does not find the program, so I have removed it manually, but a registry entry must still remain. Second computer library page follows with appropiate listings. Both screens are inoperative, e.g. upper right hand close button greyed out. If I go to Ctrl<Alt<Del highlight bring up taskmanager then exit w/o changing anything, computer library screen becomes active.

Will try System Repair option next.

Wow!!! Suddenly we have another quite unrelated problem. I reckon no matter what is tried it will come back to my post #12 above.
Think I will sit back and wait for that! I wouldn't mind putting next month's pension on it if the odds were half decent

Just to go back to the original problem, Have you tried another mouse?

PROBLEM SOLVED! (I think)

System Repair fixed the old incompatible program problem. Synaptics laptop mouse would not turn on. Function Key and F9 fixed that and trouble shooted mouse problem. New wireless mouse bought today. All is well!

One question: I had to win7 system backups prior to the trouble. They both include system images, and neither fixed the registry problem. Why is that?
