Desktop Shortcuts opens to google home page ?

Most of my desktop shortcuts open to my google browser page. However I have a couple that open to the shortcut like normal. The difference that I can see between the ones that are working and the ones that are not working is this.
Right click on good working shortcut, properties, Target =
the address of short cut, like this, ://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB89#idt_01

Right click on non-working shortcuts, properties, Target =
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --profile-directory=Default --app-id=olmifpbkncnamjhbhijbaekfbpdp

Also if I create a new desktop shortcut, it does not work also, same as above.
How can I fix broken shortcuts ? Thank You

I'm thinking that Chrome and Google has bundled and installed some unwanted goodies on your system.

Yes, malwarebytes, avast premium, and I disabled those and ran the one you suggested. Nothing, no issues found on any of them ! I am at a loss. Thanks for your reply, anyone else have any suggestions ?

How are you creating your shortcuts?

If nothing else go to the program and right tick and select Send To/Desktop.
This will make new Desktop shortcut Icons.
Check the new Icon and see if it works.
If it does, remove the old shortcut.

I go to more tools, add to desktop. It adds a page to desktop however it is Google home page. It also gives the same target address as stated in my first post,
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --profile-directory=Default --app-id=fmiojokebemncnfbniohjbhfpofndff
Just to make it clear, I have spent hours doing research and trying things to fix this, with no luck of course.
In the target in properties,Default --app-id=fmiojokebemncnfbniohjbhfpofndff this shoud be the actual address of site I am wanting to add to desktop !

I posted nothing about 'tools'.

Where are you finding 'More Tools'?

Are you making shortcuts of Google pages?

Google Groups
I won't let me copy/paste the exact forum thread.

I did find this on the Google Forum

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The desktop shortcuts you add from Chrome has its own unique extension id created when you add a shortcut to desktop from Chrome, and it is what Chrome uses from the parameters in the shortcut to open up the URL.

This is an example of what such a shortcut points at -
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --profile-directory=Default --app-id=bdoojkgkkghhiflkdcfjbdniemdhfdde

Since there is no extension folder with app id bdoojkgkkghhiflkdcfjbdniemdhfdde on the other computer it fails to open it.

You have two options to make it work,

You have two options to make it work,

To copy the extension files created on your computer to other computers which is at this location on Windows 7 systems (note that each Chrome profile has its own set of extension, so you have to consider adding this to other profile folders if you do not want to open it in the Default profile, as well as change the red highlighted part with the profile's name)
C:\Users\depy\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions
Copy the folder that matches the app-id from the folder and copy it to the other computer at the same location.
Now the shortcut can be used on the other computer .

or the easier approach,
manually add the shortcuts on each computer.

or the easier approach,
manually add the shortcuts on each computer.

There is another idea that you may consider if you are into coding and know basic web development - that is packing it as a small extension and share the packaged file for others to install (though users do have to later add its shortcut on the desktop) - Packaging - Google Chrome - You can use the extension files from the folder and pack it as a crx file, it will work perfectly fine.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seem to be a Google Chrome thing.

I suggest removing Google Chrome and IF you must have Chrome download and install again.

Another option.

Use another browser and search for this.

Default --app-id=bdoojkgkkghhiflkdcfjbdniemdhfdde

Then the Google Forum.

Please read my post #4 again.
I posted nothing about 'tools'.

I know of no other way to create a desktop shortcut other than right click to right top page, then more tools, then create a desktop shortcut. Thats it, thats all I am doing.
I am a old guy, I don't know much about computers, however I do know something has changed. I have been creating shortcuts on this PC this way for years.
I do appreciate the help you have offered. I have asked about this on the google help forum. I also have seen several post with the same issue. Only one received a answer it said to paste the url into the target box. I tried that and received errors, would not work. So again thanks for the effort.

Why do you want these websites on your desktop. They really should be in your web browser.

Instead of trying to save a website to your desktop, just right click on the opened website & select Bookmark Page. This will save that website for revisiting at any time & not clutter up your desktop. You can have a selection of regularly visited websites showing as tabs if you select Show Tab Bar, then you only need to click on any tab to take you straight to that website.

Here's how I do my shortcuts in IE:

First of all, I set the IE homepage to something I don't mind going to everytime. Perhaps about:blank, which simply brings up a blank "webpage".

Next, I create a short cut to the website I want to go to. Let's use sevenforums.com as an example. Here's what will be listed as the target of the shortcut:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" https://www.sevenforums.com/

In other words, there are two items on the line: the first item is IE itself, and then a space, and then the second item is the website I want to go to.

(The first item is enclosed in quotes, because there are spaces in it.)

I also do this same thing for Firefox and Opera as well, the difference being that for Firefox, the first item points to Firefox, and for Opera, the first item points to Opera. I'm sure you could use this method for Chrome as well.

There are several benefits to doing your shortcuts this way:
  • The website always opens in a new window, rather than simply moving to the new website in the current window.
  • I use the browser of my choosing for each website. For example, I want some websites to open with Firefox, while I want others to open with Opera. It will always happen the way I want it to when I use this method.

If I'm doing some shopping for the same item or similar items on different sites, I'll put shortcuts on the desktop for temporary use. Anything for long term or repeated usage will be bookmarked. Sometimes I don't delete the shortcuts cause I'm lazy :o, then I can't see the bat on my desktop anymore.

From your post #5

I go to more tools, add to desktop. It adds a page to desktop however it is Google home page.

That is what I was talking about.

I have two internet shortcuts on both my systems. Severn Forum and Ten Forum.

Here is how I do it.

1. Open Firefox
2. Go to bookmarks
3. Drag the bookmark (Seven Forum) to my desktop. Do the same with (Ten Forum)

All other websites are kept in my bookmarks section of the browser.

I hope this helps.

Google Chrome-URL desktop shortcut won't open up webpage

I have exact same issue. My desktop URL shortcut opens up on the Google Chrome page. I think an attack began the issue. After finding two suspicious files, I found out it stemmed from a program meant to find bitcoin information. My malware program found the original files; but, didn't catch the two damaging ones that was spying on my internet usage and downloaded files. Anyway, after isolating the spyware and getting rid of it and restoring defaults, it viciously wiped out some of my files that contained "$" and it also prevented me from opening up any internet shortcuts from the desktop. First, I examined my Chrome settings; but, first, I reset everything, made sure Chrome is my default browser, got rid of all the exe files not necessary, went to advanced, made sure everything was set correctly, etc. On a developers advice, went to task manager, closed the proper exe files, ran a diagnostic, typed in somethings on the list he downloaded on a Microsoft forum, re-opened the exe file. Didn't work. After going through a half of a day's worth of fixes with the same issues remaining I found three ways to deal with it:

1) instead of "Go to desktop" or "Create Shortcut"..I "save as page" on my HP laptop computer. I think my HP notebook has similarly written language.
2) or CREATE A SHORTCUT IN A FOLDER
Highlight a URL in the address bar.
Drag the link to a folder on your computer or right to your desktop.
3) or CREATE A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP
Right-click the desktop, go to New, and select Shortcut.
Enter the URL (copy/paste) and select Next.
Type a name for the shortcut and select Finish.

I prefer #2 or #3 as "save page as" also saves a file folder along with the shortcut.
