Detelecine vs Deinterlace

The video filters in HandBrake have settings for both of these filters, but it will only allow one or the other...not both. I have Googled the definitions for these, but they were confusing, because they kind of sounded like the same thing. How does one decide which to use and when?

They are different methods to achieve the same result, i.e. converting films shot at 24 fps to a suitable frame rate for displaying on a TV. Because they effectively do the same job, although slightly differently, the options can't be used together and are mutually exclusive.

Thanks, that is probably the best explanation possible, but it raises as many questions as it answers. I understand the part about interlacing as far as it applies to a video screen, but not as to the source (DVD, etc.). I have never seen any spec on a DVD to determine how it is set to handle either deinterlacing or detelecining...hard or soft. Therefore it would be difficult for me to know how to make a decision when encoding a video, without having to do repetitious runs, which requires many hours of experimenting...which is what I would like to avoid, if possible. Is there a way to access a DVD prior to encoding?

I can only suggest that you take a short film sequence of about 10-15 mins, encode it using both methods and see which gives you the visually better result. It has to be said, however, that the best method will depend on the source images and that you will find some images convert better one way and some the other.
