Did not ask for the upgrade - now what?

Thanks, Kodi. I started with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. About a quarter of the way through the process the ininstall failed. A dialog popped up and I chose "Uninstall with recommended settings" It said "this product installation has been corrupted. Run setup again from CD (etc).

Download and install Revo Uninstaller Free then use it to uninstall,depending on the level of corruption it should work

Thank you. I used Revo, and it went through the process, but afterward office 2007 still shows in the list of installed programs. On the other hand, I no longer find a folder for it, so I think it worked.

I did this after using the earliest restore point, May 30. That would be the date I had done a complete restore, which removed all my files and programs. I realized that must be where the 2007 had come from. When I bought the computer, the store had removed all the trialware for me, but that restore must have brought it all back. (I also now have the worthless Microsoft Works).

The first thing I did after going back to the May 30 restore point was set update NEVER to scan for updates, since setting it to ask permission was ignored. Then I disabled my wireless LAN. This is drastic, I know, but this office 2007 is the most persistent VIRUS I have ever seen.

I have turned the LAN back on to access this forum and download Revo. Now I will shut down the computer and see if it tries to install any updates during shutdown. Cross fingers. Cross toes. Cross eyes...

FYI you always had office 2007 on the computer, when the OFFICE UPDATES ran, it set itself back to the default. You can safely have WINDOWS UPDATES turned on, just don't "check for updates for other microsoft products."

Microsoft would never give you a $400 application as a windows update. I understand your frustration with this, but you could have gone to the start menu and started the older version of office at any time, it just defaulted to opening with 2k7 instead of your older version.

All the trialware was removed from the active partition when I bought the computer. I paid for that service. When I had to do a complete system restore because of a serious malfunction, the trialware was brought back, even the ultra-useless Microsoft Works. I just didn’t notice at the time.

Yeah, I found that setting during this ordeal.

No. Believe me, I tried. Even the Office10 folder was gone. In retrospect, I guess it just had the hidden attribute turned on. In any case, the old version was NOT available for use. There may have been steps possible to re-enable it, but how to do that was obscure, to say the least. Even the very knowledgeable people on this forum who helped me never said “just click this and this to use the old version.”

Yes, someday I will turn on searching for updates, but I approach that with caution. When I changed the setting to ask permission before updating, that setting was ignored.

Can I just add my 2 pence here, if you've turned off Windows Updates just make sure you do check each month for critical ones or you could be putting your computer at risk not installing the important updates.

Go to Control Panel/windows update and on the top left click on change settings and you will get a screen similar to the attached one,just untick the last two options and Microsoft will only search for and offer updates for windows 7
