If you wanted to go back or Forward in Firefox (im on 7) when brousing but wanted too keep the page your on, Click the middle mouse on BACK/FORWARD and it will be in another TAB with the rest of the Forward or backwards that you had there.

Crazy.

If you don't have a middle button youu can try Left+Right at the same time - that is often a replacement for middle button

As for Middle button shortcuts there are many ....

Chrome

Middle button on Tab - Close Tab
Middle button on back button - Duplicate tab

Windows Taskbar

Middle button on tile or running program - start new instance of the program

*chuckles* it's not a big deal. I do have a desktop PC too, ya know :) I have a mouse for my laptop too, but it's so much easier using the touchpad when you're in bed with the lappie doing some late-night browsing. I don't mind the lack of a middle button at all. :) (But thanks for the tips above!)
