difference between file sharing and streaming

this is my assumption, tell me if i am right or not please. File Sharing allows other people on LAN to do anything to anything on my computer if they have username and password, public folder sharing allows other people on LAN to do anything to anything in my public folder if they have username and password, media streaming allows other people on network to only read my media, not write, so it's like read only. And if it's possible how do i control what my computer is streaming.

Nope, sorry. You can share read only to some users, modify to others just by using users and groups. Public is public, a different class of folder. Streaming is live, not stored, and not recommended for most uses.

if you tell us what you want to share (in what way (read, write,modify)) with what users (guest, users, admins) we can tell you how to do it

It sounds like you have a basic idea of how both work now.

There are two methods you can use for deciding what can and can't be looked at.
Create a homegroup
Join or create a workgroup

If you only have Windows 7 and/or Vista PCs you can use either method, but many prefer homegroup as an additional password is required to make sure others aren't connecting to your network and messing with your files.

If you have any XP computers, you will have to set up a workgroup.

Thanks, i actually figured it out with the advanced sharing option, and i only turn on streaming for when i stream movies to my PS3. But i wanted to know if i could see what exactly i am streaming to the device, i know with VLC i can get a live video of what i am streaming from the device i am streaming from.
