difference in new and old monitors, how much is too much?

I'm looking at buying two more 22" displays. Hopefully the price will come down right before Christmas.
The specs between the old and new monitors are slightly different. Will I see that big of a difference?
The monitors will be used for gaming and more screen real estate while doing other tasks.

New display
resolution: 1680x1050
brightness: 250 cd/m2
contrast ratio: 1000:1
response time: 5ms

Old display
resolution: 1680x1050
brightness: 300 cd/m2
contrast ratio: 800:1
response time: 5ms

I agree, between the two, theres probably not going to be much difference.


However, if you move up to a LED monitor thats something along the line of:
1920x1080, 50,000:1 or better CR, and 2ms response, you should see a significant improvement.

The price diffreence may not be that much more either.

Both displays are Dell's. I picked up the 22" I have now on sale. It's a year old with no issues.
If I get a 1920x1080 (like wishmaster said) won't it look weird next to my current 1680x1050 monitor?
I'm planning on having 3 total, so keeping the specs the same would be good.

I have two GTX580's in SLI so no problems on connectivity.

Well if you want 3 way monitors you want the new 2 to be as close to the current one. So the ones mentioned will be fine. Personally I'd save a little more and get 3 new ones then you can get 3 1080p LED screens! Ben Q monitors are getting a good name for themselves. Apart from them I'd only ever touch samsung screens

Different resolutions aren't that bad with triple screens. I had 1440x900, 1920x1080, and 1680x1050 on my setup for quite awhile (sig pic shows this setup). If you game across all 3, then you will need to run all screens at the same resolution, which in my case was 1440x900 across each screen. It was fine for games to have the higher res screens running at 1440x900 but for Windows Desktop use, running lower than Native makes the image fuzzy.

I now have 3 1920x1080 screens, all 3 are different since I upgraded one at a time when there were deals on the screens. Samsung 23", HP 23" (with Display Port), Viewsonic 21.5".

Personally I would hold out and opt for a nice IPS display. They are more expensive, but it's because they perform quite a bit better.

Agree with going with an IPS, the color fidelity is much better than a TN panel. And before we get into the "but games run better on TN panles" I'm running a HP ZR22w and have NO ghosting issues with it.

Same here, using a 24in 1920x1200 IPS (The PROPER computer monitor dimentions) and besides having good color for photo work, plays games with no noticable ghosting at all.

If all your doing is gaming and internet or watching all your videos on the monitor then a TN panel is "ok". But if you are doing anything else graphically they are crap, get an IPS. (Plus you get back your rightful desktop space from the pixel robbing 1080p television panels!

Thanks for the confirmation. That always comes up, but as far as I have ever been concerned, it's never been a real problem anywhere but on paper.

Well you know how FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) spreads throughout the net without any real world facts. Sure you can always show something to be true to a point, but in the real world it rarely translates to everyday use. Sort of like saying air can kill you, true but....

Personally, I love the Dell U2410 monitors. But at $495 at Amazon.com right now, I can see why people just put up with their TN panels and claim they are good enough. But if you have ever worked with an IPS and a TN side by side, it's extremely unlikely that you would say you prefer the TN panel.

Well I can tell you I updated from a TN panel and the viewing angle and color fidelity of an IPS panel is far superior, plus.... no "gaming" issues

Anyway I paid $259 (includes shiping and handling) for my 21.5 inch panel at amazon. The way my computer workstation is set up the 21.2 (22 inch) was perfect, howver I'll eventually move to a 24 inch once I get back into my photography.

$450 for a monitor is not bad! My first 24" LCD monitor cost me a gob stopping $1400!!! When it burned out 7 years later and I had to replace it, $450 seemed like an incredible deal

But yeah when there are $199 24in TN panels out there though... But you get what you pay for!
