I am working from a clean install. It is a bit of a pain; however, the effort is worth it for a smooth running system.

To answer the earlier question, enterprise and ultimate feature wise are the same, the difference is the licensing terms and how they are activated. Ultimate has no VLK, whilst enterprise is VLK only.

The most important component of the OS is to utilise the multi CPU's.
So WHY has MS only utilised all cpu's from Home Premium up???

Starter and Home basic are obsolete before anyone buys it.

You are confused. Microsoft mean one physical cpu which can have 2 or more threads aka cores.

Back in the RC days (ages ago now) I ran Ultimate but I have no need for some of the advanced networking features, BitLocker or other fluff that's bundled into Ultimate and Pro. Home Premium does all I need and performs very well, theoretically better than the more bloated versions.

Home Premium all the way.

If I was in charge of releasing editions at MS here is what I would do:

1.) Scrap the starter or basic edition. There's no point. Many users will upgrade because they want the eye candy and I think its a waste for users to find out that they got the wrong version, and eneviatbly will be upset that they spent money on something they didn't want.

2) Release two versions of Win7:

- Windows 7 (thats it, not ultimate, no special name) this is for regular users, but has all the features of Ultimate without the title of "Ultimate". If you don't need a certain feature you just don't use it. Kinda like how some Mac users don't use all of the features of OS X, they just use what they need and its there if they do need it one day.
- Windows 7 Enterprise. This version is for companies, business, servers etc. it could have extra features for these companies, like things a server will need.

3) Change the price. MS needs to be more competitive with Mac. I use PC and MAC. I need to use both platforms because I work in the web industry and testing is important. Plus I like having the option to use multiple platforms cuzz I'm a nerd and enjoy both sides equally. Many of my die hard mac friends don't believe me when I say that Win7 is impressive. So if MS hopes to stay completive they should change the pricing to grab (and keep) users on the PC platform. I will have a hard time if MS releases Win7 Ultimate for $349 (full version) like they did with Vista. Thats a ridiculous price compared to $129 for OS X.

I really enjoy Win7, and I will upgrade. But MS needs a reality check. This economy, unemployment, its a hard sell to charge $349 for software. MS should bare that in mind.

C'mon MS keep it simple and affordable. What do you all think? On base, off base, let me know.

I could not agree more! I am building a wicked gaming rig and want to buy 7 Ultimate but don't think I can because I need a power supply. Maybe I have to settle for the OEM copy but what I hear It's good for 1 installation and that aggravates the crap outta me because it's the only way to get ultimate "reasonably" priced.

It's the mobo that OEM is tied to; it can be installed as many times as needed to the same mobo.

I bought OEM ultimate for my build and ultimate full for a clean laptop install - the one in my sig. Microsoft will always release different versions - more $$$. If you can't afford it but Premium - but not you can only install 16GB RAM max. Ultimate increases this to 192GB.

In theory. No-one is ever going to need 12gb+ RAM anyway, and if you insist, most mobo's dont even support more than 16gb.

I Know that but what we are looking for is Refreshed Memory. For say, start of an Online Game, All Memory Free. What is the best way to get All Memory Free :p

Brains.

EDIT: I'm back on XP3(same computer), My Win7 RCA Final's drive took a dive didn't even last Four Seasons.
Next drive I'll get a Win 7 Install I'm used to it and I like it.
I've seen these Tokens for VISTA Users that can up Grade to Win7 . How about People like Me who bought XP2 OEM with there Computer Because they/me knew that the OS(VISTA) did Not do what the Administrator would liked it to do.

Out.

Yeah, I don't think this is a factor at all. 90% of people won't have a need for 8GB of RAM with Windows 7, 99% of people won't ever need 16GB of RAM with Windows 7. And as others have stated, current mobos generally won't support that level of RAM anyway.

The fact that Ultimate has built-in fax software is a biggie for me and I see it's not even listed on the first page features list.
It eliminates your need to have a fax machine as long as you have a modem in your computer. :D

You will not have to install all your programs over again in a clean install if you do what I did.
Use Acronis 2010 to make a full backup of your present OS partition; create a .vhd file from that backup using Acronis 2010, then you will be able to "attach" the vhd to your clean Windows7 installation and run "most" programs directly off the attached vhd.
I am even able to play Left4Dead off of my vhd file and it runs as well as it did on my old Vista installation.
Now, there WILL be programs that will not run correctly off the vhd that you will have to reinstall to Windows 7. I have not tried running every single program mainly because I did not discover this awesome built-in feature of Windows 7 until AFTER I had reinstalled nearly all of my programs.
So this will save you "some" of the aggravation of a clean installation.
