I do not need Win xp anymore, but the system wont boot without the hard drive installed. I created the win xp system about two years ago and then added win 7 about a year ago. All the important data is on win 7. Because the system in question is directly connected to my work I need to backup my data. The logical option was to buy an ssd (Samsung 850 EVO 500gb), clone the OS to it, and then keep the old hdd as a backup. To perform the backup I used acronis true image 2016. Once the cloning operation was completed i unplugged the win 7 hdd and proceeded to boot with the ssd. The boot operation only got as far as the win 7 loading screen. The coloured balls came together and the emblem would just glow with nothing further happening. I tried this twice with similar result. The next step was to run startup repair from the disk but the message I received was that the hardware or software setup had changed.
my question is simple: how do I clone win 7 successfully to an ssd? If we can somehow disable win xp (which I think is the way to go) then it should be solved. But I leave it up to your expertise to show me the way forward.
thank you.
