I have two hard drives. the first on C:\ is Win XP. The second drive is Win 7 G:\. I attempted to clone the Win 7 drive to a new ssd but when the operation was complete the system would not boot anymore. It said that there has been a change in the hardware/software configuration. If i remove the ssd and connect the hdd the system boots fine. What am I doing wrong?

Hello and welcome Barthos now mate first up -

SYSTEM SPECS

mate can we have some system specs please as what you have postedgives us not that much to work with and given there are so many manufacturersof components and configurations that do influence what goes on within anygiven machine and OS.

Now unless I am sadly mistaken Windows uses the C: drive as the primary boot drive and as the 7 drive is G: I think it is still looking for a C: drive to boor from.

What I would do is first decide what OS you want and I would like to know just how you installed 7 onto the second drive with the XP one still hooked up?? We need to clarify just what you did to get this set up.

Hi ICIT2LOL

thank you for your rejoinder. i hope you can help me. first off:

g:\ 1tb seagate barracuda 7200rpm (win 7)
e:\ seagate barracuda 7200rpm

OS: win xp 32 bit (c:\)
win 7 64 bit (g:\)
sound card:RME fireface 800
bios version:

I do not need Win xp anymore, but the system wont boot without the hard drive installed. I created the win xp system about two years ago and then added win 7 about a year ago. All the important data is on win 7. Because the system in question is directly connected to my work I need to backup my data. The logical option was to buy an ssd (Samsung 850 EVO 500gb), clone the OS to it, and then keep the old hdd as a backup. To perform the backup I used acronis true image 2016. Once the cloning operation was completed i unplugged the win 7 hdd and proceeded to boot with the ssd. The boot operation only got as far as the win 7 loading screen. The coloured balls came together and the emblem would just glow with nothing further happening. I tried this twice with similar result. The next step was to run startup repair from the disk but the message I received was that the hardware or software setup had changed.
my question is simple: how do I clone win 7 successfully to an ssd? If we can somehow disable win xp (which I think is the way to go) then it should be solved. But I leave it up to your expertise to show me the way forward.
thank you.

Before we go any further and to get it right in my mind - I would like to know the exact procedure you used to install the 7 onto the drive it is on.

What I am confused because if I read this right the drive with XP on was connected up at the time and I cannot see how 7 found it's way onto the drive you have it on??

If it had been me I would have installed 7 onto the drive with all the other drives disconnected so that 7 "saw" that empty drive as a C: drive, and then cloned it to the SSD but even that has to be a drive of the same size because unless you personally have some way of cloning a large drive to a small drive it cannot be done.

I think and I know it is a pain but you would be better off by installing the SSD into the machine with all the other drives disconnected and reinstall the 7 to it and then copy across any programs from the other drives as you wish and at your leisure. I am pretty sure the clone is not working because the install onto the G: drive has not installed properly if you had the XP and other drives hooked up at the time.
