I have one issued by the military. I have to use my CAC (common access card) to log in to gov't web sites. On that card are digital signatures for verifying my identity, signing forms and digitally signing E-mails.
How to go about getting one as a civilian though, I'm sorry to say i do not know...

That just takes me to a web page that explains what a digital id is. There is nothing there explaining how to get one.

Are you using the WLM program that is part of the suite of applications called "Windows Live Essentials" or are you using the web-based "Windows Live Hotmail"?

I'm using a Windows Live Mail application that is running on my computer. I can't remember if it came as part of Windows Live Essentials, as I didn't install most of it/them.

The button you mention takes me to this web site:
Windows Live Mail Help Center - Digital ID

Windows Live Mail Help Center - Digital ID
It does and it says "To get the digital ID of the sender, ask the sender to provide it to you."

For sending mail: Get or create your own digital signature - Excel - Microsoft Office
(I'm guessing that it may be possible to purchase the Digital ID and use it with any mail program that allows its use, but to be sure I'd go to the Office Marketplace and search for more info there.)

"If you select the option Get a digital ID from a Microsoft partner in the Get a Digital ID dialog box, you are redirected to the Microsoft Office Marketplace, where you can purchase a digital certificate from one of the third-party certificate authorities (CAs) with an Office Marketplace listing.
If you plan to exchange digitally signed documents with other people, and you want the recipients of your documents to be able to verify the authenticity of your digital signature, it is a good idea to obtain a digital certificate from a reputable third-party certificate authority (CA)."

I found the page on Microsoft Office Marketplace that has links to partners who sell the ID's. Digital Signing - Marketplace - Microsoft Office
