DirectX 12 will not be supported by Windows 7

I was a bit surprised at not seeing any similar reports if not the same already posted previously. But this one was still only three weeks old.

DirectX 12 promises both dramatically increased performance in games, thanks to reduced CPU overhead and better support for multithreading, and significantly reduced power consumption, a real boon for owners of gaming laptops. It will of course be built into Windows 10 and compatible with Windows 8 as well, but the news isn't so good for Windows 7 diehards.


Speaking at a PDXLAN presentation earlier this month, AMD's Chief Gaming Scientist Richard Huddy said Windows 7 remains Microsoft's most popular operating system: 52 percent of all Microsoft OS users are still on Windows 7, and that number is actually growing. "It's a very, very popular operating system," he said in comments starting around the 20:30 mark of the video.


But in spite of that, or perhaps because of it, he continued, "One thing that's not going to happen to it is DX12. Yup, DX12 is not coming to Windows 7."

I don't know ......... kinda bummed about that but then I don't play many "top line" games, so 7 and DX11 will have to do for a bit. Not hating on 10, kinda like the Tech. preview btw, but will be keeping 7 for awhile longer. Just wish Microsoft wouldn't do this sort of thing. Smacks of....... blackmail in a way. But anyway ....... I'm just a BigOleDummy so what do I know.

I don't have any immediate plans at vacating 7 either keeping it as long as possible as the primary OS for the time being. But I did plan out allowing space for a second suitable OS as I have been hearing 10 will easily surpass the blonder many feel 8 was! MS apparently has done a bit more in working out things for the multiple platform OS with the desktop option to boot to the desktop as well as return of the Start menu people wanted back.

Presently I'm taking a look at the new to come version's preview on VM Player before putting it on the second OS drive for the fast lookover. If it looks like what I have been hearing then the preview will go on followed by the beta or RC whatever builds comes after. The DX problem may or may not effect some older titles. But I won't know until the first install is seen on the physical drive. I expect the usual Open GL hassles to come up however as they did with 8's early build.

The beginning of the end for one of the greatest OS's ever. End of mainstream support ends in about a month. Don't think we have much to worry about there though..

Still got another 6 years of extended support so hang in there

I couldn't agree with that more since everything at this point is still a little out in the wind. Once it is out and being experienced on an almost endless variety of systems both gaming and other the actual results will be in.

Hopefully it won't end up being like DX10 was as far as the need for new cards while the article on the other thread suggests otherwise since 10 ran into problems on the now defunct XP while Vista and 7 had been much closer at the core levels. On the beta for 8 I was still able to run some old Legacty/XP orientated games there showing they seem to stay some how longer then newer titles! It's mainly updated video and sound drivers on the much newer hardwares where the actual problems are seen. That's mostly with capability issues and outdated game coding.

That does kinda stink that its not coming to 7 either; but oh well. I will just stick with 11 i guess. Doest much matter to me anyway though cauae I dont really play any heavy duty games on my system. I leave that for my 2 game consoles.

Here I manage to keep some Steam titles on as well as a few older 98-XP compatibles that so far have survived this long! I had one on the 8 preview build when that was first out and not one fuss about DX11 there. A great number of multiversion games will some how manage as long as they are not too hard coded for only one or two versions while others were made to remain behind in order to sell the next newer or other new titles.

I thought Microsoft had to support windows 7 until the extended support ended that should included Direct x, Internet explorer, Microsoft Security Essentials. and Windows Live email* as well. This is a little concerning, will Microsoft be dropping support for Microsoft Security Essential in January 2015?




*Referring to the email program you can install on Windows 7 an update version of outlook express.

MS dumped Live Hotmail in favor of their new Outlook.com not express which also knocked out Live Messenger in favor of Skype. That's the new option for a live messaging service you contend with now. I lost a few contacts unforunately when that all came about.

As for DX12 I think the hardest will be for those still running Vista not so much for 7 since that's still kind of within the three version window where progression is concerned as far as the change from Legacy to NTFS. As far WLM that ended up being dumped in favor of the changes they were seeing made with W8 and Metro Apps as well as a new form of Outlook while still maintaining existing WLM accounts that had to undergo the necessary changes.

I wasn't talking about the web based email. See you can download a program called windows live email for windows 7 but Microsoft also has had web based emails called hotmail, live and now called outlook.

My concern is they continue supporting Microsoft Security essentials, Internet explorer, Windows Media player, Silverlight (Amazon uses that) player after January 2015 until extended support ends for windows 7.

They dropped WMPlayer with 8! There may not be anything but a newer WMP 14 since 13 was an option not included with 8. MS felt there were too many other players available when deciding that. As for the MS Security Essentials that is mainly for those that do not have a regular av program they use already and while able to clean many bugs off is still lacking.

Silver Light won't have any worries there! Each every other new vendor results in seeling a prompt for the newer version of that it seems. As for IE the latest versions still work on Vista but not on XP since that is now considered dead issue. Vista will be the next to go in a year's time from this point. I suspect IE 12 or 13 to be the last that will run on the previous version as that will be off of the supported list.

From what I have read, there is a good deal of controversy surrounding DirectX 12, as to it's speed, actual quality improvements, actual usefulness in power needed to run it. As always, even when it does come out, it usually takes the gaming industry 3-4 years to embrace it.

So overall, for it not being available in Windows 7, doesn't concern me in the least.

It isn't a "Game Changer", tee hee, did I just make funny?

You can always choose to stick with DX11 which the present DX on here. There were some issues when DX10 first came out however that needed to be addressed mainly due to the change of technologies seen with video cards. With ATI and later early on with AMD buying ATI out there were some issues with several updates at the time showing DX10 wasn't even at fault.

Likewise you can expect that some would still run into some eventual problems once 12 is available which it likely will for 7 since 7 will still be in the support cycle for some time to come until 2020. It's usually the combination of things that have to be meshed correctly whenever something new is out.

That not supporting windows until the extended support ends. Even Oem's expect that. That what we in part paid for when people purchase a computer. Should we ask Microsoft for a partial refund of what we paid for the computer if Microsoft stop complexly supporting IE 11?

That's not likely at all. IE 10 was the last newer version XP would see while I would expect IE12 will still go on Vista for another year or so when that version is the next to go well before 7!

Wrong.

Xp latest/last internet explorer was version 8.
Vista latest/last internet explorer version is 9.
Windows 7 last internet explorer version is/will be 11.

(reason is 10 was so buggy Microsoft had to come out with 11 to fix the issues with 10)

Windows 8 will have support until internet explorer 12.
windows 10 will have support until internet explorer 13.

Actually I was thinking about Vista rather then XP which will now be going soon enough anyways as it proceeded 7 in the MS order of progression. Why won't Internet Explorer 10 run on Windows Vista? | ZDNet

Back in 2009 most of us knew the day would eventually come for 7 once MS got back on it's 3yr. schedule of things. But who would have foreseen Metro? being dominate in 8 and 8.1 to follow while 10 will see the return of what people want back the most namely the Start Menu so we will at least have something to look forward to hopefully improved upon by the time 2020 arrives!

That's what i thought, that IE compatible OS/order.

IE 9 is for Vista last browser since nearly three years now? Hopefully still getting cumulative updates.

If the end of support for Seven will go till 2020...Does IE 11 will be dumped faster? Could be hard browsing with IE 11 after year 2018, like most of Websites are leaving already IE 8 and XP for a faster experience browsing....
