not sure which section this pertains to specifically, but "drivers" seems close enough.

issue

i recently upgraded to an sli graphics configuration. since upgrading, my previous method of avoiding the TDR driver crash has stopped working.

known fix that i can't get to work anymore

when running a single gpu, i could disable and uninstall the nvidia hd audio device, then disable and uninstall the hd audio controller under system devices. problem solved, no crashes.

after adding the second gpu, there are now two hd audio devices and two hd audio controllers. upon disabling or uninstalling either controller, the system automatically re-installs the hd audio devices previously uninstalled, which in turn causes the hd audio controller to re-enable/re-install itself.

to be clear, all hd audio devices and hd audio controllers on my system must be disabled AND uninstalled to prevent TDR (or, since the upgrade, full system freezes or restarts. sli = double TDR?)

already tried it

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/82137-drivers-turn-off-automatic-driver-installation.html this tutorial does not stop automatic driver installation, it just prevents the downloading of drivers from windows update. tried it anyway, no help.

How to Stop Windows From Detecting New Hardware | eHow disabling automatic hardware detection as described here does not prevent automatic device recognition and driver re-installation.

safe mode does prevent the drivers from re-installing immediately, however it also prevents most software from booting properly. after uninstalling hd audio controllers in safe mode and rebooting, windows promptly re-installs all uninstalled devices and controllers.

please help

so, is there any way to convince windows to stop being so "helpful" by re-installing these device drivers at boot? or can windows be made to stop looking for uninstalled devices altogether? thanks in advance.

Did you ever find a solution? I have pretty much the same issue. Very irritating, and all the published advice seems wrong.
