Disable Disk Defrag on SSD?

I read an article titled "Windows 7 gets SSD-friendly" a while back that Windows 7 was supposed to take more consideration regarding computers with Solid State Drives. One of the mentioned steps would be to disable the Defrag option (something to do with SSD not getting any benefit from the defraged drives yet the extra work could actually lower the lifecycle of the SSD).

At last week’s WinHEC techfest, Microsoft announced it wanted Windows 7 to make better use of SSDs. “SSDs are on the path to reach their full potential” says Microsoft senior program manager Frank Shu, who in a conference session on Windows 7 Enhancements for Solid-State Drives outlined how Windows 7 will be more SSD-friendly than Vista or XP.

After recently installing Windows 7 onto my Lenovo x300 (which includes a SSD) I noticed the Defrag schedule was not disabled.

Hello Dscoduc, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The Disk Defragmenter schedule will not be turned off by default, but should have the SSD drive unselected instead under the Choose disks settings to prevent the SSD from be defragmented when the schedule runs. However, the SSD is not always unselected here either by default, so you should always check it to be sure.

I use SSD an Windows 7 since December and read a lot on OCZ Forum.

Currently, there is absolutely no SSD support in Windows 7. He does not detect it's a SSD.

the bad news is, defrag.exe will show up regardless what you set in the scheduler.

is there any way to fix this? i tried it the rude way to rename it, but it can't be done (without special tools like a linux livecd, which i'd like to avoid).

ps: indeed, despite what they say, there's no ssd detection at all in win7. autodefrag, prefetch, and superfetch will all be enabled on an ssd install too.

win7 is claimed to detect SSDs by testing performance characteristics instead of querying certain information (due to them being inconsistent among vendors and generations) and that has nothing to do with bios updates.

Hey hey relax now This was not true in April 2009. It's not the case today. Windows 7 detect SSD.

eh. it does not detect it, just installed it freshly a week ago. why would i make such statements otherwise?

I think the problem is when you don't have AHCI mode enabled in your BIOS, then Win7 cannot detect the SSD.

I had AHCI turned off and Defrag, Superfetch etc were on.

Turned AHCI on in the BIOS and reinstalled and now they are off..

The problem with this is that when i had achi mode turned on, Windows could not detect my traidiotnal HDD's i had to use IDE mode for all drives to be detected..Im having the same issue where my SSD is bing defragmented and i cant seem to disable this feature, any suggestions?

Something is wrong in your BIOS settings, then blaquee. You have an Intel chipset board. Windows 7 recognizes SATA drives on controllers set to AHCI on Intel chipset boards...no drivers should be needed. usually, a person has your error when they make a Windows 7 disc with Vlite or something like it. The solution should be simple, though. Set the controller to AHCI, and then load the SATA controller drivers from Intel.com during the Windows 7 setup.

You need to turn ACHI on in Windows first then turn it on in Bios.
