Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up a new computer and I'm working
my way through a few minor issues.

My current task is figuring out disk assignments and why they
aren't displayed as expected in some situations. I realize that
discombubulated disk assignments have no ill effects on anything
but I would really like to know why it is what it is.

Here's the deal:

I installed Windows with only one drive attached to Sata port
0 on the board and recognizedas such in the BIOS. One by one I would
attach data drives to the next port # to keep things orderly. So for drive
letters in Windows I have:

C (Samsung SSD)
D & E (Crucial SSD - partitioned)
F (HDD)
G (HDD)

In the BIOS, each drive is correctly identified as Disk0 to Disk3..

However, in Windows Disk Management they are:

Disk 0 is the Crucial SSD
Disk 1 is the F HDD
Disk 2 is the G HDD and
Disk 3 is the Samsung SSD

Disk 3 *should* be Disk 0, but its not.

This arrangement is also displayed in Macrium Reflect in both the Windows
environment and via boot media. (I need to scroll down to select C drive to run
imaging.)

In Partition Wizard (bootable) the disks are displayed in the correct order.

So basically, outside of Windows (BIOS or Partition Wizard) the ducks are in
a row -- but inside of Windows and in Macrium Reflect bootable media, the
ducks are scattered about. (I will assume the Reflect media is thus because
it was created in Windows.)

The question is why the inconsistency? TIA

I have been through the same thing. My C: SSD shows as Disk 1 in Disk Management. One day I thought I would correct that. It didn't seem to matter where I hooked the cables, nothing changed. Disk Management just does not show them correctly. Macrium seems to be even worse as the Letters are also off. I wish I had an answer as to why.

Many thanks for the response and the links. Interesting explanation of why this happens. I'm just
gonna call it a bug ... ignore it ... and move on to my next issue, my stoopid onboard audio.

Thanks again!
