Disk Defragment taking forever!

I have never had great luck with HP honestly. Yes their products are very fairly priced but it comes with its own set of problems. My father refuses to buy anything else other than HP but inevitably within a few months something bad will end up happening to the laptop...his latest HP laptop victim is the wireless card. The builtin wireless card is dead in a laptop of all things! Talk about inconvenient! And of course he didnt get the warranty extension and well now he cant fix it without paying a small fortune.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I was online with an HP support person (could barely understand her) and of course, after doing all kinds of things like F10ing and checking the hard drive for errors, she's got me doing a system recovery. After it finishes, I have to call them back with my ticket # and see what else they want me to do. If we have these same problems after the recovery, I am taking this laptop back to the store and talking to the manager. I've never been so disappointed in an HP product in my life. This is the first laptop we've ever had, and it makes me glad I have a desktop.

The hard drive is a 250 GB drive, and the processor is a Intel Celeron 900.

Rich, you are a sweetheart, thank you for those words. Our son has a learning problem, and we've tried to do everything possible to make this Christmas special for him. This recent diagnosis had him depressed, and he had no idea he was getting this as his major gift this year. One way or another, I expect HP to make this right.

Well, after reading that McAfee was dragging down some Windows 7 computers, I decided not to install that program. The HP tech after the system restore was done installed an update to the BIOS system, and it seems to be helping. I installed a free version of AVG anti virus, and will let this run a couple of days to see how things work. I'll take the laptop once a day and make sure we do disc cleanups and stuff. As far as HP products go, the 3 desktops we've owned have never really given us trouble, and have been very dependable. If this laptop gives me any more headaches, I"ll take it back and replace it.

AVG has a reputation for throwing lots of ads wanting you to upgrade to their paid version. Get Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

May I suggest, look into MSE Miscrosoft Security Essentials, one of the best antivirus, free from Microsoft, if you have windows, one of the best.

Thanks for the info Rich. The thing I like about McAfee (we get it free with Comcast internet) is that is does something called "McAfee Quick Clean", cleaning temp files, internet cache, lost file fragments, orphaned registry keys, deleted emails, active X files, and other crap that bogs down the computer. I never saw AVG do that. Do programs like MSE do the same? :huh:

Temp files, etc. can be done using disk cleanup, which is built into Windows.

Registry cleaners have no real effect on performance and can do damage.

McAfee and Norton both cause significant performance degredation on every machine I've ever seen them installed on.

I"m giving my son a few days with the computer, then I"m going to bring it back out here to Computer Central (my kitchen workstation that is pretty much my office) and taking a look to see what disc cleanup does. Has anyone noticed how different things like disc cleanup are with Windows 7? Even the analyze feature seems to take forever, when it isn't that slow on XP. It seems to clean things that weren't done, or weren't shown, on Windows XP. The desktop I use myself is an XP product, and I don't plan to upgrade it until I have to. I don't like W7 much, too many steps to get to where you want to be.

Will uninstall AVG free and install MSE when I get it from him in a few days. McAfee is what I run on our desktop computers, and now I"m wondering if I should use MSE instead.

Firstly all I appologize for my account name I made this account ages ago when I was about 18 19 years old and am now 23.

Duranie im very sorry to here about your problem however it does certainly sound like the hard drive ive repaired a laptop which my step dad sat on when he was to drunk on vodka lol.

I took out the hard drive and it sounded like a babies rattle when I shook it.

Harddrives aint shock freindly every hard drive I ever got has stated fragile on the antistatic bag it came in.

Ild say this hard drive was one of these goes fine apon testing it at the factory but when you receive it it may work for a while then not go after a couple hours of use.

Anyway this hard drive should have its own manufacturers warranty this bypasses HP's warranty.

You may have to send it away to Seagate or Samsung or Western Digital or who ever makes the drive if the store isnt kind enough to give you a replacement most of them can't be stuffed doing a return to manufacturer and will just give you a new one.
