Disk Management Problem

Hi,

I bought my toshiba l505-s5998 model last dec. I was planning to shrink the my c:\ location as its 320GB and i want to have an another drive with 100GB space shrinked from the c:\ drive.

But when i tried doing it using diskmgmt.msc it show me only 1008MB available though i have 185 GB of free Space. How do i solve this issue. I am not able to see the actual free space in the diskmanagement application.

I even tried to do using the cmd prompt but was unsuccesful to do it.

Can any one guide me how to resolve this issue and shrink my drive.

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

Hi Bare Foot Kid,

I am attaching the Screen shot with few desc and question with in the screen shot. Hope that should make my question pretty clear.

1.) My Computer


2) Diskmgmt.msc


3) Disk management showing wrong available space.


4) I even tried cmd prompt. But got error even in that. The error is not displayed in the screen shot.

Hello again.



Have a look at Option One of this tutorial at the link below to see if the Partition Wizard boot CD program is able to shrink the partition.

We have had no errors with this program so far but as always, be sure to make backups of anything you would not want to lose before you attempt the shrink.

If PW CD can't shrink it enough, try Perfect Disk 10 trial version. First defrag for compactness, then rightclick C to Offline Defrag>System Files which will move the files in the way. Back up your data first.

You've received excellent advice as to how to solve your problem.

I can add nothing there.

The trouble when you try to shrink using Win 7 is that Win 7 likes to put some of its system information at the end of a partition and doesn't want to move them.

PartitionWizard and PerfectDisk, when run offline, aren't hampered by MS's preconceived ideas.

Try Acronis Partition Expert or Paragon Partition manager

Ya i did receive. But the problem is still there.

Using Partition Wizard - Bootable i encounter an error.

Error
Failed to exec the following cmd.

Resize Partition DiskIndex:0 Partition Index : 2
New Straight LBA:4096575
New Partition Size : 497195685 safemode:1

Error Code : 36

Minitool partition wizard detecting that file system of the partition have errors. Please use "Check file system" function to fix it first.

Yep i have received excellent and working solutions. But i guess my HDD has some problem, becoz it not ready to allow me partition it.

Hope some other software would help me. And that would also not crash my existing windows 7 OS.

Did you check the File System using PW CD as requested?

Try booting the Win7 DVD, press Shift F10 at first screen to open a Command Line, run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

Then run the HD maker's bootable diag/repair full CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Before you create partition defrag your drive with a decent degragger
if you use degraggler look where disk space is being used, if use blocks are near the end of drive your partition can only be th remaining size after last use block

You were already using the best partitioning tool for Win7 which is free Partition Wizard. It prompted you to check file system which is on the same menu as Resizing operation you were trying.

I also gave you information how to run Disk Check and HD diag/repair scan which will further clear the HD.

Why would you ask for help here and then completely ignore the advice given?

I did defrag before doing the partition using the one Windows 7 provides. And its a scheduled process so it starts every wednesday.

I tried looking for the option of File System check in the left menu but couldnt find it.

and about Disk Check and HD diag/repair. The One says i need windows 7 bootable Cd but i never got the CD. I just had a preinstalled windows when i purchased the lappy.

and ya, sorry but i didn't ignore the advice, I tried looking up but was unsuccesful to get those option so didnt wanna take more chances and crash my system.
