Display driver stops responding

This morning I started up my machine, but suddenly the whole thing freezed. Oh well, these things happen, I started it again, but after that, the screen went black for a few seconds and the following message popped up "Your nVidia display driver has stopped responding but it was restored". Sometimes it continues to run after that, sometimes the error comes back in a few seconds and kills my PC completely.

I tried everything. I tried new drivers, I tried Windows update, I tired system restore, I tried to delete the driver and make a fresh install. Nothing changed.
I don't think that a fresh Windows install would solve this problem :s

I found forum threads about this problem but they were two years old! This is a brand new configuration, I bought it in February and since then I didn't touch it. It worked perfectly until this morning....

If the computer is BSOD'ing please upload the crash logs (called DMP files) to us.




To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.



To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.


When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Here are two DMPs.

I reinstalled the driver with the nVIdia installer which had a function of clean install. This - in theory - uninstalls all the drivers and only then installs the new ones.

Uninstall Daemon Tools. It causes problems on Windows 7.


Run these tests and report back the results
1. Memtest86 - Run for 7-8 passes - RAM - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
2. Prime95 - Run all three tests for 3-4 hours each or until fail - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-cpu-stress-test-prime95.html
3. Hard drive scan using SeaTools - Both long and short tests

Have you tried uninstalling your video card drivers and using older ones? I've been seeing issues lately with the newest drivers and using older ones fixes the problem.

Nope, I didn't find a place where I can find the older drivers for my card yet. I didn't look for it too much though because I have difficulties with starting a RAM test from the USB - the machine just doesn't accept it as a bootable device and starts Windows instead.

It crashed when I started a race Elder Scolls IV crashes on loadup. They bog ive the "program stopped working" error message after the - already - usual black screen fo a sec.

Are you able to try a different video card in your computer?

You can try running a video card stress test and report back the results

Then I put in my old Geforce 8600 GTS (I had to install new drivers to make it work), and run the stress test. At least I realzied that I need a more effective colloing system, because the cards heat went up to 95 Celsius...
I also tested it with 3DS Max and Shift 2 and it worked fine. I'm afraid that we've found the problem...

Please tell me that it's possible that not the graphic card is wrong :s

Try pointing a house fan into the side of the computer and see if the problem continues. If it does then you most likely have a bad video card. How long ago did you purchase it? It still might be under warranty and you can send it back for a new one

The problem is that the test crashed when the new card was only on 75-80 Celsius... I removed the cover of the computer after a few crash to provide better cooling, because I didn't know what would be a "too high" temperature for the card. It only changed that the test crashed when it indicated lower temperature.And as I wrote the older one worked fine even on 95 °C. And my computer works just fine since I put the old card in.

I want to be absolutely sure that the problem is with the card because Hungarian warranty rules are ridiculous. The vendor - if he's clever enough - can refuse to replace the bad component if you don't have everything from the original package, including every little paper and even the plastic bag!

We only deal with probabilities not certainties. So your card could be ok but there is no way to know for sure. Have you tried your card in another computer?

Can you get a larger PSU? Would that be easier? If not then I would attempt to get the card replaced

Very strange indeed. I'm not sure what's going on here. You have sufficient power for the card and it's not overheating. That either leaves a bad video card or bad motherboard. But since you've put your old card in and it works fine then I would still say your card is bad. Did you send it back to nvidia or to where you bought it?

One last thing to try, which you might have already done, is go into device manger and remove the video card device. There should be an option to remove the drivers as well. After the reboot reinstall the newest drivers. If that doesn't work then I am all out of ideas

I already did that. One of my friends suggested that the problem could be that I'm using Win 7 x64. But I don't know how could I prove it or how could be THAT a problem. At nVidia they can't be that stupid...
