Computer display problems.
Running Windows 7 64 bit on a Rampage motherboard with Intelcore i7 CPU and Nvidia GTX 285 graphics card, with LG Flatron W2242S monitor.
Went to repair shop with fan problems. All running ok with full display screen and proper resolution before that. After fan was sorted, shop reinstalled Windows (legit edition as it updates without problem) and installed Nvidia drivers, I assume from Nvidia website. This is driver number 341.81, and the screen resolution I get is 1680 x 1050. Display now fails to fill screen with about an inch of black area on right.
I have tried all the options in the Windows screen resolution changing tool. I have tried all the options in Nvidia control panel. I can change the resolution but not the screen size. With some resolutions I can fill (indeed overfill) the screen. But I can’t get both good resolution and a complete screen.
I thought about the monitor driver, but I have been unable to reinstall it, as the disk I have is for Vista/XP and I cannot currently make it run. There's allegedly a driver update on LG's website but I can't run it -I click on it but nothing runs. But as, at some resolutions, I can get a full screen, I think the monitor is actually not in need of a driver? It comes up as P n P on the screen resolution options in Windows.
I have tried to install the Nvidia driver from the original disk but again it is designed for Vista and XP and won’t run – I do get a message saying ‘this program may not have installed…..’ and I click ‘try again using recommended settings’ but then no further information appears.
If I delete 341.81, Windows installs an old driver (2.2.2) which comes from………I don’t know where, as the one on the disk appears to be 182.42 and I have Windows update turned off. The resolution which works best on this old driver is 1280 x 960 at which it fills the screen. (The recommended for the monitor is 1680 x 1050.)
So I think that the display absence is to do with the Nvidia driver or the non-working of the Nvidia control panel.

Any help gratefully tried!

Welcome.

Have you tried adjusting the monitor itself?

Yes, I have done everything on that which seems to pertain to the problem. I have also managed to improve things a little (the black bit is down to half an inch now) by going into Nvidia control panel, choosing a low resolution, then adjusting the desktop to 'do not scale', applying, and then going back to the original resolution. Got that from another similar thread on here.

Just done a bit more research. Went into windows screen resolution, advanced, chose list all modes, found 1680 x 1050 truecolor32 bit, apply, and lo! It works! Not an option on the drop down menus, but there we are, solved! Thanks to anyone who read this so far. I'll mark it solved.
