Display Settings and Power Consumption Question!

Hello all

I have 2 Samsung Displays in my room. 1 that is connected with my PC is a Samsung LCD Monitor that has native 1440x900 (16:10) resolution and the 2nd one is a new Samsung LED Monitor that has a native 1600x900 (16:9) resolution that is just connected with my PS3 which I hardly use.

Now as I have noticed the power consumption of my LCD is 34watts typical and LED is 14watts typical (on official specs on the website). I have a small factor UPS connected to my PC as we have frequent power outages/black outs in our country and I was wonder if I swap both displays and connect the LED with my PC it will save at approx. 20watts straight according to the official specs also not that the LED comes with a 12v adapter. So will it help?

Also if I swap display will it shuffle my desktop settings as in icons, gadgets etc.? just asking out of curiosity as I have some custom settings on the desktop which I don't want to mess around with for a time being

Ok BB mate I think as long as the machine's hardware supports the LED monitor / screen then there should not be an issue. Now that does seem like a fairly low res for monitors these days - any reason??

I don't see why the icons should be shuffled around either because the machine is generating them not the monitor that is receiving the signal.

Now you mention the LED does not come with a 12v adaptor and I ma wondering why that should be an issue as long as it is powered from somewhere it should have no relevance to it operating normally.

It is good though that you save on the power and I guess you know already but it is due to the use of LED's to light the screen as opposed to a fluorescent tube/s. Again you probably know already that the current draw of an LED is typically very small compared to other forms of lighting.

The LED does come with a 12v adapter i mistakenly wrote "not" instead of "Note".

My mai concern with the desktop settings related with default positions of applications as i like to see everything right in the middle of screen for instance when i open Steam or WMP they are perfectly aligned to center of the screen so i was wondering if icons shuffle so will it change the center window settings for several other apps too? I have many apps which are open centered by default.

Well I don't see why you cannot set it as the default and that should by logic coming from the machine unless I am hopelessly wrong. I say that because any graphics have to be driven by the graphics chip or card whichever one has and that is driven by the OS. But I stand to be corrected but it makes sense to me

For example the taskbar is set at the bottom by default and one has to change the settings to get it in different spots and that is an Windows OS feature

Will it help what? Save in energy costs? Yes, a little. But hitting the monitor's power switch to turn it completely off (instead of just sleep/standby mode) will help save more.

As for your icons, they WILL move when changing resolutions. But they should not "shuffle" around. That is, they may move out further or closer to the center. But that will be a one time thing - unless you keep swapping monitors.

Yes Itaregid that is a fair comment re resolution and I know what you mean but the OP was only asking a simple question and what he does with his equipment is not really the issue.
Me personally shut my machines down after each use as I am not a fan of leaving them on 24/7 like some. I think that practice is wasteful and highly susceptible to damage from heat or power supply brown outs or surges even with surge protection in place.
But once again what you have posted is a valid point on the res and swapping monitors around.

Huh? What he does with his equipment??? I don't know what you are talking about.

He clearly is asking about power consumption AND resolution settings - as both the topic title and post content illustrate.

So the issue is clearly about power consumption and about saving energy with his equipment. So it IS all about what he does with his equipment.
