I don't need Anti-Spam or System Utilities. I'm currently using KIS2k11, and I'm just wondering if I need the Suite, or am I better off using something like Avast.

Hello Echo,

A great free option would be to use Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It provides real-time protection for your computer that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes and a good firewall

Good protection, free, and as a member of the BSOD squad, it has never caused a BSOD, that the squad knows about. We have seen plenty of AntiVirus related BSODs

Anti-Virus:

These two are the most recommended

Firewalls:
  • Windows Firewall
  • Comodo Firewall (link) - Free
  • Online Armor (link) - Free/Paid
  • PC Tools Firewall (link) - Free
  • Outpost Firewall (link) - Paid

Extra Security:

  • MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (link) - Free/Paid
  • SuperAntiSpyware (link) - Free/Paid
  • Hitman Pro (link) - Paid
  • Sandboxie (link) - Free/paid

TBH, i don't see the need for paid as there's great freebies but some still do believe in paid products..now if you search for things you shouldn't, visit dodgy sites and what not you're asking for it. using the recommended software these people in this forum and in this thread by the way.

I have not been infected since Nov 22 of last year(date of PC bought) and still counting.

Nem, this is a good list. But I would take AVG off. I had a terrible experience with it - 6 systems of my computer club infected despite AVG. And they were triple booted XP/Vista/Win7. Took a week to fix it.

Yepperz, that's a good combo. I've seen MSE catch things that the "paid" AV's don't.

I noticed that in order to get Wi-Fi protection, which is what I use I need to buy Comodo. Is there a free alternative?

I'm with everyone else, i did use Avast but not anymore. I use MSE along with malwarebytes, comodo firewall and SuperAntiSpyware, i'm not saying use all this but along with MSE and extra get Malwarebytes.

Wi-fi protection is a gimmick. It doesn't matter to your firewall or AV if things come over a wireless adapter or an Ethernet adapter. If you are that concerned, you would do far better to invest in a router which will have a hardware firewall.

Hi Echo, I prefer avast over MSE, avast give me more option and avast'a web shield is just great. you can use either one its ur choice combine this with free MBAM and this combo will give more then enough protection and the good thing is all these three are really lightweight. :) again i find winpatrol is also very handy... u can also try this. and anther important thing is to keep all ur software, and OS up to date. keep safe........

Hi Echo,

I advise you to uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security. KIS has plenty of features and settings which makes it difficult to manage and control. All you need is basic yet PROVEN protection: Microsoft Security Essentials as your anti-virus, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as your on-demand scanner and Windows Firewall as your firewall.

Best regards,
Francis (frzwin7)

I have a software link that has malware and virus in it that i always run to check out my virus software. It works and MSE came up with a threat. Here it is on the bottom right of my computer. I have gave this link out to others to try and if you want it i could pm you the link. Thats if your brave like me. It took about 10 seconds for MSE to clean it. Really impress with this software.
