Do i need/have java?

I was trying to instll a program a couple of weeks ago and it said i needed java installed in order to run and it.
So i installed it but ws having problems and also decided that i could do with the program i was trying to run anyway.

First off should i have it installed anyway?
If not can i check to see if its installed?
If i do then which version do i need?

It is best not to have Java installed unless you really it. There are some serious security issues with Java and it doesn't appear they will be going away anytime soon.

If you have it, it will be listed in Contol Panel / Add Remove programs

Get the latest version.

I never install Java until it`s needed, like the program you tried to install asked you to install it.

I personally have removed Java and haven't seen the need for it and have never seen a program request me needing it to do anything as far as downloading a program,
The browser benchmark asks for it but it's in no way manditory to have it installed,

I personally would avoid any program that required Java. There usually are other programs that will not require it. Java has been having ongoing security issues for some time now. Based on its history, I don't see those issues going away anytime soon, if ever.

I think Apache's Open Office requires Java for the database to work. I was trying to get accustomed to it but as I had long ago past experience using MS Office I uninstalled it & bought MS Office Pro instead.

You don't need it unless you need to use a program that requires it. Some websites you might want to visit could require you to have Java installed to work. Personally I only install it when needed then remove it afterwards. I haven't needed to install Java in months.

Ways to check if Java is installed that I know of:

You shouldn't need it for websites either. IE has a script processor built in. If a site wants more than that, I click on the "X". Way too many other sources for information. Or at least enough to be choosey. And only a few sites even get the privilege of using Flash.

Good advice. Personally I use a 64 bit browser with Plugins Click To Play Per Element enabled so that I choose not to allow flash for the entire page content. The 64 bit browser doesn't use JAVA. When I need Java I'll install it and use a 32 bit browswer on a temporary basis. Then I'll remove Java. Will also configure EMET for Java use as it seems likely that even the most up to date version is a security risk as far as unknown exploits are concerned.

I also a “script interpreter” – executing a script requires both the script interpreter, which executes the script, and the script file itself to be trusted. The script interpreter will refuse to open any non-trusted file.

No I certainly don't think you are wrong, but I could not get the Open Office database to work unless Java was loaded. I installed Java & it then worked, but I just found I preferred MS Office instead.

Interesting. I have OO on four Windows 7 computers without Java and it seems fine but I hardly use it since I have so little use for it.

I have Office 2000 which works on Windows 7. Maybe I'll install it so I will have labels, etc.

Yes it is looking good. Is your Office 2000 the Pro version. I am using Office 2013 Pro as I need Access, Excel, OneNote & Outlook but really don't use many of the others much these days, but it was really only a few dollars more to get the whole program than to try & get it piecemeal.
Actually I am surprised that Office 2000 will work with Win 7, but your indication seems to suggest otherwise.

It just says Premium. I uninstalled OO and installed Office this afternoon. Only using Word and the PowerPoint feature. I'm just a hobbyist and not into the other features.

Thanks jadinolf for that info & it fits in with my original post on Java being needed for Open Office's database, which they call Base. So if you use their Base program you have to have Java installed. That's not the reason I uninstalled it though, it was that I just could not seem to get into the right frame of mind to persevere with it.

I hope all works out for you with Office 2000.
