TBAH I haven,t any idea what the service is for.
As a single computer user connected by Ethernet do I need the service active? would your answer be the same if BBC IPlayer were in use with wireless or Homeplug connection?

It precompiles .net assemblies so that when a program goes to use them they are all ready to go and don't have to be compiled just as your trying to use them.
It will run any time you update your .net runtimes (like from windows update) or a program install that needs them but otherwise is supposed to sit idle.
So yeah I'd leave it on, it normally doesn't do anything, and when it does it's low priority and shouldn't interfere with any work your doing.

One of the quickest ways to render your computer unstable is to start messing with Windows default services. That's always been the case, and even more so than ever with Windows 7.
