Do I need to "upgrade" my office 2007?

I've been using Microsoft Office 2007 (Windows 7) for nearly 5 years and I was wondering if it's necessary for me to change my office suite to something like 2010 or 2013.

I haven't encountered any problems for any programs such as words, and I don't find it "sluggish" according to other people as this is the only suite I've been using.
I've read through informations about 2010 and 2013 version and I don't see any huge improvements nor ground-breaking features for these versions. Of course, I might have missed some important facts so I would appreciate it if someone can point out any advantages in using these versions.

So, overall I would like some suggestions of what to do with my current suite. Should I change it or keep it?

To be honest I think the 2010 is a lot more fiddly I cannot see much improvement over the 07 except for extra bells and whistles which quite frankly I find annoying.

Yeah, there's hardly any noticeable "improvement" and/or new "feature". Just a few extra stuff like design templates, animations, and things like that. Don't waste money buying those, you'll be dissapointed. Stick with 2007.

Yep ditto nilank in hindsight I wasted my money well not entirely cos I bought it to put on a machine I rebuilt and sent to my brother in the UK and downloaded the spare copies to my good machines here only find it as Ni says "cluttered"


I also did this because I kept getting not valid from Microsoft when I changed installs of the OS on the same machine and found this was just as good - free and the full version half the Microsoft product lighter and quicker I think .

When 2010 came out, I checked the advertised improvements over 2007 and, while I saw nothing wrong with them, I didn't really need them and I wanted to get some more mileage on 2007 (more bang for the buck). Since I didn't like the direction Win 8 took, I decided I would run Win 7 to nearly its last dying gasp (much like I did with XP after Vista came out). Win 7's EOL is 01/01/2020; Office 2007's is only 10/10/2017 (2010 is 10/17/2020). When Office 2013 with its Win 8 styled UI and only one nontransferable installation per license (M$ relented on the nontransferable part after people raised a ruction over it), costing the same or more than 2010's family pack, I decided to get 2010 while I could and do not regret it one bit, especially since I caught it on sale. Office 2010 actually has more improvements than advertised (don't ask me what they are; I have a good memory, it's just short) and, once I poked around in it for a while got a bit more familiar with it, I actually find it a bit easier to use than 2007.

If one is planning to stick with Win 7 to the bitter end, I strongly recommend getting Office 2010 ASAP while you still can (it's officially been discontinued by M$ so what copies that are still out there will be the last of it), especially if you need it on more than one computer (that applies only to the family pack; key only versions that have to be downloaded are only slightly cheaper and allow only one installation per key).

That's pretty good, after all, it's free! Worth a shot for those who are short on budget!

@LF; Depends on the user. I owned Office 2007 and loved it. When 2010 came out, I just freaking bought it without giving a second thought (I go hyper when I see new software rolling out ), and then, duh, I felt almost as if I bought the same software again! Maybe I'm not a user of those "new features" of 2010 at all!?

@nilank. Actually, I don't use many of the advertised new features. The ribbon can be customized a little better and templates seem to be a bit easier to work with. One new feature (at least, I think it is new) I like is the ability to switch from the blue color scheme that was getting old to either sliver or black (actually, dark gray). The black is much easier on the old eyes (not as much glare). The biggest advantage over 2007 is the EOL.

I think the simple answer to the question "Do I need to Upgrade" is: it depends. If your 2007 version of Office works for you, why upgrade? Newer doesn't always mean better. This is an older article about upgrading to Office 2010. I think the points the author makes are still valid today.

Some of the new features include built in screen capture (handy since it is fast and I don't have to open up another program) and Native PDF support (handy since I don't have to open up Adobe Acrobat or use a virtual printer).

I've yet to see an office suite that includes support for enhanced meta-files like Word does. I could work around the lack using a graphics program but Word does it well without having to switch between programs. On my old machines, running too many programs at the same time stressed the RAM at times but that is not an issue on my new machine (32GB RAM just might be enough, said Jeannie facetiously) so it's mostly convenience now.

unless you need some of the workplace collaboration stuff (Ms Lync for example) or you are a mega power user writing a huge amount of excel macros - just stick to Office 2007 if you don't want to spend any money -- it still works even on Window 8 Enterprise X-64 so don't worry about it suddenly stopping working.


(Even Office 2003 works --the mean and lean version - but there are some changes so I's stick with your office 2007).

unless you need some of the workplace collaboration stuff (Ms Lync for example) or you are a mega power user writing a huge amount of excel macros - just stick to Office 2007 if you don't want to spend any money -- it still works even on Window 8 Enterprise X-64 so don't worry about it suddenly stopping working.

Jim I only used the 2010 cos I bought it for my brother and well the extra installs were going begging but in all honesty the 07 is just fine and so is that Kingsoft for that matter it in fact is a whole lot lighter and in my mind faster and without the clutter that even 07 has in parts.
I got it on one of my testers and it flies

Plenty of businesses and other establishments use Office 2007, and if you are familiar with it by all means stick with it. I had never used 2007 and when I got back into college, I got 2010 for $20, and after working with both, I can tell you there isn't a nickels worth of difference for the average user.

Well KB unless you don't count that awful copy / paste and default settings etc etc nonsense quite frankly I should have left 07 on my machine and not bothered with the 10 version.

LOL that is a trainwreck to put it nicely! There are some things that need to be ironed out almost immediately......most of them are stupid default settings that try to "help" you by doing what they "think" you want to do........there should be one button that says turn this crap off!

As long as there is nothing wrong with your version of office, there is no reason to upgrade

Haven't you been reading this thread? There are reasons to upgrade; the OP may or may not feel they are applicable.
