The system is a Acer V5 that came with windows 8 preinstalled. It has no optical drive. The usb ports work and I can get to a command prompt as well as diskpart.

After Windows 10 updates, the system begins to seem unstable and finally boots into startup repair and recovery.

I've made all the changes in the bios and the bootable flashdrive isnt detected by the system as being bootable. I created the bootable on a windows 10 system.

I also have a windows 8.1 installation disk with a good product key.

What are the cmdlets and/or procedures to force boot from the flashdrive?

Agree with Samuria. Factory reset can normally be launched from windows or from BIOS. Backup your data as it will format the drive C: and install windows from an image from Recovery partition.

I agree with doing the recovery partition method. This will reset the computer to original factory condition, which would mean a clean, effortless install of Windows 8.

Then, if Windows 8.0 is installed and not 8.1, you can grab the 8.1 upgrade from Microsoft website and get to 8.1.

*UPDATE*

Reinstalled windows 10 without updating. Allows access to files on the usb device. Right-clicked "setup.exe" and chose "Run as admin". Everything goes well until I accept Microsoft's "stuff"...LOL

(hey...having a long dragging headache with this so I thought I'd do something to keep me perked about it.) :)

Immediately after accepting, I get the following:

"Windows 8.1 Setup: Something happened, setup has failed to determine supported install devices."

Has this left me with needing to post at the EightForums.com?

If you want Windows 10 on the machine, post at Ten Forums. If you want Windows 8 on the machine, post at Eight Forums.

So are you trying to run the "upgrade" installer for Windows 8 on Windows 10? That's downgrading and the windows upgrade doesn't work like that. You need to clean install 8 or you can upgrade from either Vista or 7. Upgrade is going from a older version to a newer one. Going from 10 to 8 is going from a newer to an older version and won't work.
