Opera Software has reached an important milestone with the development process of the next iteration of its proprietary browser. As of August 25th, 2009, users can now download and run the first Release Candidate of Opera 10.0. As you can see from the images included with this article, Opera Software has revamped the Opera icon, pointing out that the browser is close to finalization. In fact, RC Build 1733 of Opera 10.0 is considered stable enough for adopters to start test driving the release in their environments.

“Opera 10.0 has reached the release candidate stage,” noted a member of the Opera Desktop Team. “What this means is that Opera 10.0 should be considered to be in a stable state code-wise, and that only selected fixes will be added if necessary. Apart from those (if any), the RC should be considered ready for release testing for Opera 10.0.”

As was the case with previous development snapshots, Opera 10.0 Release candidate (RC) Build 1733 is up for grabs for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users. As you can see from the images included below, in Windows 7 RTM you can use the Ctrl plus Scroll on the desktop in order to grow or decrease the size of the Opera icon. If you insist long enough, you’ll be able to get the icon at the same size I did. This should of course also work on Windows Vista.

“Perhaps the most obvious change in this RC is the new application icon, designed by Oleg Melnychuk. The red O will continue to represent Opera, but it has received a major facelift. It is also available in bigger sizes than before for Windows and Mac, so that you can view it in all its glory on your desktop. The document icon has also been updated,” the Opera Desktop team representative added.

Windows and Mac users who will start testing Opera 10.0 RC need to know that the Norwegian browser maker has introduced a number of changes. “This RC will no longer use the beta preferences on Mac, but will upgrade your old 9.64 preferences. Windows has been switched over to the non-beta installation path as well,” the Opera Desktop Team member explained.

Opera 10.0 Release Candidate (RC) for Windows is available for download here.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.

I'm not a fan of the new tray icon in this release (previous release was 10.0.1729)

Anyhow, I mainly use Opera as a feed reader these days. I've been using Firefox more often because of the NoScript plugin which is awesome for security. Firefox and Sandboxie together basically make my computer unhackable.

Chuckle.

I am NOT stuck in my routines. I do miss Maxthon, but it just doesn't behave properly in 7. I miss IE7Pro, but it just doesn't behave properly in 7.

I will try Firefox, again, in a few minutes.

I will uninstall it later today.

I have just installed Opera10 RC, it looks better than before and very fast indeed but I am not sure how long it will stay. :sarc:

+1

Plus the fact the browser just is very weak in the graphics/css department.
And it somehow not being intuitive. I keep clicking the wrong menu's in it.

All browsers have there pro's and cons.
I used Firefox for a few years, but it's getting so bloated and slow, I just got fed up with it. I just wish they would strip it down to the core, and leave people the choice to add in anything they want.
Why does it have to be more bloated with every version, when you have add-ins?

Chrome is without competition the fastest browser and I use it quite a lot, but it has too many quirks to mention.
But not being redirected to my private messages when I click on the notification popups, must be one of the worst. :D
And of course the fact I can't do online banking with it really sucks.
But realizing how new it is, I think it has great potential.
I just hope they will focus on improving quality and not quantity.

I use IE for every site that doesn't load correctly in Chrome, like my online banking and some other https sites.

So Sassa, thank's for mentioning the new RC, I will give it a try, although after reading Antman's post, I have little hopes it will be a permanent resident on my system. :D

IE7Pro runs fine here and has been throughout the Windows 7 beta.
I have seen many reports of IE7Pro working just fine for many people. Pigs my system up - slow response to open tabs, perpetual hourglass on new tabs, etc.

Gotta go....

is the best thing they can say about their new browser is that it's got a new icon?

Chrome is without competition the fastest browser and I use it quite a lot, but it has too many quirks to mention.
But not being redirected to my private messages when I click on the notification popups, must be one of the worst. :D

i love chrome :D

luckily, i haven't noticed any quirks, and i have no trouble seeing private messages.

finally, i have zero problems with my online banking (except for my balance)! i must be really lucky!

the only site i've had trouble with was some driver download site that wouldn't work properly - luckily i had ie8 as a backup. as chrome slowly gains market share/penetration, developers will need to add chrome compatability to their checklists - it can't be too hard.

anyway, isn't it great that we all have access to wonderful free software, and we can choose and use whatever we like!

Hi Antman,

What's not behaving properly with IE7Pro? My wife prefers IE to Firefox, but she likes the "speed dial" extension that I have with Firefox. I had used IE7Pro before so I downloaded it and applied it to her IE8. Is seems to be working fine. Am I missing something?

EDIT: Never mind Antman. I just finished reading the rest of the thread!
