Downloaded virus, and I've tried everything to get rid of it.

Sad but true, a new HDD or clean image or clean re-install. I have been there too - during a new XP install. As soon as it went online, I got a virus somehow, so had to start over without ISP connection and installed AV first. took some time, but that system ran for 6 yrs before being replaced 4 days ago with Win 7.

seth500 how do I run killdisk from MBR?

The system Image I used was definately clean. It came from another computer, and I'm 100% positive that it's clean so it's deeper then the image. I'm having absolutely no problems other then trying to use boot disk and things like that. I'm still trying to get retail win 7. I'm trying to go get it tomorrow.

Britton30-Doesn't F-secure, killdisk, and Spotmau run before boot?

That I don't know. I'm fairly sure that F-Secure would have to be installed through Windows. If you have Norton Internet Security, they have a tool which will boot and do a scan. The Norton Boot Recovery Tool boots the computer, updates itself and scans your drive. I've used it on two infected PC's and they are still running.
I don't know if this option works if you have no OS installed.

Hi,

You already tried the F-Secure boot disk but you said your computer shutdown during the scan (see your Post #14) - thats isn't normal and points to soemthing else going on. That lead me to think that you had a problem with your system (Windows installation).

I think you are at the point where you need to do a completely clean install of Windows. Note that you can access DISKPART during a new install to securely wipe the hard disk before actually installtion of Windows. Follow these two tutorials:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

In my opinion, any additional ad-hoc attempts at scanning etc. are going to confuse the issue further and just muddy the waters - its time to bite the bullet and do a fresh install.

Regards,
Golden

FWIW: A format of the hard disk is not always the cure, especially if you don't delete the existing partitions first as whatever you might have could have put itself in a hidden partition.
Secondly, turning the computer off sounds suspiciously like your cpu could be hot and shutting down.

When you boot a system repair/restore disk, did you remove the existing partitions, all 2 or 3 of them?
this is important as the boot sector could be corrupted by the virus.

Fwiw.

Mate for what it's worth I'd be chucking in a new HDD and putting your new OS on it - cripes it's atken so long now and HDD's aren't that expensive - and you have your files on the image.

do you really need all this grief??
