Downloading speeds question

I live in a very slow download speed remote area sometimes as low as 10 - 15 kbs during peak periods and recently took in my Win 10 for repair so have been using my Win 7 in the interim. Now for some strange reason files are being downloaded during the exact same peak periods at up to 300-500 kbs which has never happened before. Obviously I'm certainly not complaining just puzzled as to what the possible reasons could be....??

What kind of connection you have (ADSL, Cable modem, Celular etc)? Is it connected directly to the computer or it goes to a router for distribution?

Not sure of correct terms but short yellow cable from laptop to modem with a cable then on to phone socket....

Probably it's because there were less other people using internet. Peak usage will vary depending on when will people actually use the internet connection for different uses at the same time as the others.

Oh yes quite true but this has always been a known situation for ages, so why I do any big weekday downloads between 1 and 2 pm when it can reach 50 or 60 kbs. Weekends are hopeless as well so as I'm a light sleeper I do any large ones during the small hours. I could change providers but as I've been with this one for years if I did leave I'd get stuck in a locked contract for 12 - 18 months with one of the heavies which is a big no no.

This latest development is a totally new situation altogether and one I'm only too happy to continue with, it's just that it's so puzzling....

The OP has seen a faster download speed when he switched computers, from a Win 10 to a Win 7.

If the modem is connected to a telephone line the connection is via a ADSL. Normally on a ADSL modem the dial up is set on the computer. The speed difference between computers may be they are with different configuration and dialing to a different ISP line.

In addition the amount of Background Noise [as in the amount of other processes utilising the net connection either directly or programs running in the background that are taking large chunks of processing power so the Browser stalls ]

This would be the case with all connection types, but is also a posible wireless issue, less of one with Ethernet but both dependent on drivers in use

Win 10 is broken operating system, it sends a lot of telemetry data and it constantly updates something, it actually brought my laptop to stop responding at times for up to 10 seconds, fall update took 6.5 hours to prepare and 1 hour to reboot my gaming laptop and this is with 100Mbs connection, 4 core CPU, 16 GB RAM system. I would speculate Win10 is saturating OP slow internet connection with update and telemetry services. If I was OP, I would use program like OOSU10.exe to shutdown all telemetry and updates and set the system as metered connection (settings/internet), allowing updates only when no one is using computer. Either that or switch back to Win7. BTW my wife computer took 5 hours to update and my friend at work also 5 hours, so please don't tell me something is wrong with my computer, which otherwise works great, after I disabled telemetry and updates. I do updates manually on my terms.
