Hi,

For some reason i haven't been able to break past the 300 kb/s(download(32 kb's file download)) when im browsing and 150 when browsing kb/s(upload(16 kb/s file upload)). This started happening a couple of days again. Usually i get 1MB download and 500 kb/s upload.

I did what every knowledgeable person would do and i checked my drivers and updated all of them(even the BIOS). But nothing worked.. So i just went ahead and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit and installed all the latest drivers and I'm still having the same problem.

The odd thing is, my laptop gets the max speed when its connected wirelessly. Its running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit.

I even checked the firmware on the router and its up to date. I even went as far to check the CAT5 cable that is connected to my router and computer. It has no signs of damage.

I'm at a complete loss on what to do to fix this problem. So, if anyone has any ideas or solution to my problem, please let me know.

Thank You,
Vince

What speeds do you get if you test in [safe mode + net]?

Slower-than-expected throughput is usually caused either by abnormal configuration settings or interference from "security" software such as anti-virus utilities and 3rd-party firewalls. You might want to try uninstalling anything like that for testing purposes (disabling services is not a valid test).

How do i make Windows 7 boot in safe mode?

I had no firewall on my last install of Windows 7, i even turned off windows firewall to see if that was the problem but it didn't change any. In my new install of Window 7 I'm running NOD32.

How valuable is the installation on your laptop to you? Could you reinstall quite easily without loosing a lot of data or time?

If so, I would try installing W7 x86 and see if that makes any difference. Although you mentioned checking all of your drivers were up to date - a lot of Manufacturers x64 drivers are still far from perfect so this could be the problem.

Also, going into the properties of your WLAN card in computer management, check through the options such as "Transmit Power", "Wireless Mode" etc, to ensure that everything is set to a high value - and matches the settings on your wireless router/access point.

Its not the laptop that is having the problem, its my desktop.
The laptop uses the full bandwidth but the desktop seems to be capped for some reason and i don't know who or why.

The thing is, i had the same drivers when my computer was using the full connection speed. But then one day it wouldn't use the full connection speed. I didn't change or install any thing the day the speed changed.

When you say downloading, what exactly do you mean? "Normal" downloading or P2P stuff?

If it's P2P/torrent stuff then you may need to NAT a port open to your desktop from your router.

Have you installed any "network optimisers" or anything which claims to "Increase Your Internet Speeds and Improve Your Multimedia Experience"?

Have you perhaps changed any of the default IP or TCP configuration?

If not, I'd suggest you uninstall (disabling is not a valid test) all anti-virus and 3rd-party firewall utilities, reboot, and then test again.

No, i have not installed any network optimizers. Un-installed NOD32 and the problem was still there.
This was even happening right after a fresh install of Window 7, even before i installed any drivers.

Obviously, if you're experiencing unequivocally different throughput from two machines on the same network, there is indeed something different about the one with the problem.

If updating the NIC driver hasn't helped, and you're quite sure it happens on a "vanilla" install, you might want to test what happens with an entirely different make and model of NIC.

Okay, i will try to get my hands on another NIC. The one I'm using is built into my mobo.

But the thing i don't get is that it worked fine until a couple of days ago. Would damage to the CAT5 cause anything like this?

Another thing you may want to try is go to msconfig/startup and disable all.. reboot.. if speeds increase, then start enabling each entry one at a time .. test... until your speed drops out ... I know this takes time, but I had the exact problem and found that it was an anti virus that was giving me fits... as soon as I removed it from the startup entries my speed returned to normal... Good Luck...

Unlikely. The cable pairs used for the Rx and Tx circuits are highly unsophisticated bits of copper wire. Cable "damage" tends to manifest itself as outright lack of connectivity, although you could in theory get weird 'n' wonderful effects from using an under-specced cable (cat3 on a gigabit network... that sort of thing).

If it is a hardware-layer thing, its more likely that the NIC itself or the router/switch port into which that machine is plugged in has somehow developed a fault. You may want to try moving it to a different switch port - perhaps the one currently used by the "good" machine - if you haven't tried that already.

My gut feeling is that you've got yourself a software issue, but it's best to keep an open mind.

The only thing in the startup is NOD32, O&O Defrag, Java Environment and CTxfiHlp(i think it has something to do with my sound card, but idk for sure, lol).

I don't think it is the NIC on the mobo bc i RMA'd the mobo about a week ago because the chipset fried itself. So if the NIC was faulty then it would have been fixed aswell when they fixed the chipset. Just saying...

I have tried all the ports and nothing changed.

btw, Thank You for all the help so far. I appreciate it ^_^
