I am having frequent trouble when trying to drag files from the desktop to a folder or between folders, or just to another place on the desktop.

Sometimes the mouse click just doesn't capture the file at all, at others it captures it but loses it when in transit to a new location. Very frustrating.

Any ideas why this is please?

Probably a mouse problem in that right click is not holding, or you are easing pressure on the button & losing it.

A safer & more reliable method is to use Copy & Paste & then delete the unwanted duplication later. The main advantage with Copy & Paste is that if something goes wrong during the process you still have the original, whereas with Drag & Drop if something goes wrong you may not have the original intact or available.

Thank you Ranger4, but it's not a mouse fault.

Over several years, and on Windows 95, 98, XP, 8.1 and on 10, I don't think I've ever had anything go wrong with drag and drop, other than it no longer works correctly on this Windows 7 machine.

While copy and paste would certainly get round the problem, I want a proper cure.

There's something I need to try. I will report the result after it has been tried.

Earlier this evening I read in another thread of Malwarebytes causing problems with both Windows 7 and 10. Drag and drop isn't mentioned but I followed some advice on a hunch.

I uninstalled Malwarebytes, ran their cleaning tool, and installed an earlier version.

My drag and drop problem has disappeared. I can drag as fast as I want.

Glad to hear you have found the problem & it is now fixed.

It's interesting that you found that Malwarebytes was really the problem. I was having odd problems with my computer like Windows Updates frequently failing, Windows Explorer crashing occasionally for no reason & a general slowdown of the system even with an SSD, so I uninstalled Malwarebytes & all the problems have disappeared.

It makes me wonder what other software has yet to be discovered as the cause of various problems.
