Solved Driver install problem - USB stick and USB Ext HD

Hi,

I've got problems installing USB external hard driver and USB memory stick driver on windows 7 pro 64 bit.

The computer is a Lenovo t410s, intel chipset. The external disc drive is a Western Digital Elements SE 1 TB and the USB memory stick is of the brand TwinMos.

At first I could not install the external HD on the computer. It went flawlessly to install it on two other computers, one XP and on win 7. On my machine, in the device manager, the driver was identified under "other devices" as "Elements 1042" (yellow symbol). From there I tried "search for driver" and "brows for drivers" with nothing found. (no drive letter assignment issue)

At this point the computer worked fine with the ÙSB memory stick. It was at this point removed/uninstalled drivers in the "Device manager", hoping that windows would reinstall the correct driver for the external HD. The result I got was windows 7 could now not even find a driver for my USB stick. The USB stick now is found as "mobile disc" (yellow symbol) under "other devies" in the device manager.

I thought I might have removed something I shouldn't have. I reinstalled the latest chipset drivers found on lenovo's driver download site. It didn't help either.

What should I do? Suggestions? Reinstalling windows is not an option at a first stage.

Update:
I've got wmare on the machine. Mounting both the drives to a virtual machine running win xp, both discs are found, installad correctly and can be used as they should. This means it should not be a USB power problem as I've read other people have had problems with.

I was viewing a post yesterday about some one trying to get
and old memory stick working again - they were trying to do
a reformat of the device. However, after someone else suggested
and linked them out to a software download from the manufacturers site,
I had a look myself out of curiosity.

I think what you will find is that you are able to download the drivers
for the memory stck (thumb drive or whatever other name comes to mind)
if you Google the make of the drive you can usually find drivers for
your devices and manually install them.

The following link will help you find the driver/ s required for a manual
install of the TwinMos. It has a good search feature to help you locate the
appropriate driver: TwinMOS USB Drivers for Windows XP, Vista & Windows 7

Don't be put off by the reference to XP in the sites name, you will
find drivers for Win 7 here to.

As for the Western Dig ext, hard drive, have you maybe done a recent re- format?
Could you maybe have accidentally deleted the driver/ s for this drive?

I have a WD My Passport Essential and the drivers for this
device came on the device itself including the unlocker etcetera..

Can you view the following software files (or similar) if you open the WD
external drive on one of the machines it did work on: Extras
User Manuals
WD Smartware
WD Quick Formatter

If the files ARE still on the drive, try copying them using
one of the machines the drive is accepted on, use a pen drive
which will operate in the machine in question to copy these
files to and then try to install the driver manually.

If the files are not avilable on
your WD drive locate and manually install them
by searching the correct drive model here: WD Support / Downloads / WD Elements

The driver from Western Digital is brand new and there are no drivers on it. I haven't added files or reformated it. Western Digital don't have a driver for the driver. It should automatically be recognized by windows 7. It works on another windows 7 machine and on windows xp. The same for the USB stick.

In my opinion it is a windows 7/intel chipset/USB controller related problem.

Other suggestions of what could be the reason? What could be done?

You could very well be correct then.

It wont hurt to look for the chipset for your
hardware and do a fresh install or an update if their
is one.

Personally, I would create a restore point
for a roll back should there be any type of problem.

Give it a go.

"Right click on the device in the device manager that shows it isn't installed, click update driver software, enter this location assuming your C drive is your main drive

"C:\Windows\winsxs" and ensure the box is checked to include subfolders and hit ok. It should reinstall immediately and show up as a new drive in "My Computer"

You may have to uninstall the device first, replug it back in and then run through the above steps."

NOSIS solution worked!!!! with my hitachi HDS721616 Plat 80 usb external hard drive from yesteryear about 2001. I simply manually browsed to C:\Windows\winsxs In Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and BINGO; after asking me about unsigned driver (which of course I said YES) it was installed and ready for use. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!!!!:shock: What is WEIRD however is after the install the driver is shown as digitally signed by Micro$
