dual boot windows linux

Hi all currently boot windows 7 ultimate and 8.1 as a duel boot through BCD 2.2 (with win 7 the main boot) hoping to upgrade 8.1 to ten later on this year we see, but also want to add Linux can I just add the grub in bcd and then connect my all ready installed Linuxmint 16 cinnamon hard drive (that's already installed to) to my configuration, or would I be better reformatting that hard drive and using a iso to install to it ... also my Linux is fairly old is there a new one ? u would recomend

I would recommend to put Mint into a virtual partition. Messing around with the Grub for the Windows systems is no fun. Here is how.

yes thanks will look for mint 17.1 Rebecca, but doing what u say is that what u have to do every time u log on ? want it to be more permanent cheers

A virtual system is just as permanent as a system installed on the iron. I run 7 virtual systems (Windows and Linux) from an external SSD. I can attach that SSD to any of my systems and run them from there. All you need is a VMware Player on all systems. But that is a 3 minute installation.

I would disconnect your 7/8.1 drive...

connect the other drive, do a fresh Linux install, reconnect the 7 drive and use the boot menu to boot into the OS you want.

Just for future reference, when you add 10 to your 7 drive it takes over the boot and you will have problems.

Nah, Zorin is not nicer than Mint. Zorin is a lot more restrictive and a bit buggy too.

did this but when I put win 7 back in wouldn't work had to recover ? and reflect wont work now

Impossible, you must have done something wrong.

If each OS was installed while the other drive was unplugged, it`s impossible for one to interfere with the other

this is what I always thought but cant be ??? how ells would this of happened, all I did was unplug 7, plug in and reinstall Linux drive, unplug that Linux drive replug in win 7 restart

I have done it many times, successfully.

Given up on Linux for now going to use the drive for win 10 ....... might look at that other virtual thing .... but as I see it isn't virtual just the one session ???

You can run a VM any time you want, you just start it up. It`s not a 1 time session thing.

sorry after the first time everything worked again thanks, since we last spoke also done a system image update things really good now, going to look at VM cheers, for original problem

Yea my last dual boot or really installing next to 7 on my laptop did not work out well
Ended up reinstalling 7 again
Really interesting install next to another os,
7 can't see Linux but Linux obviously can see 7,
It seemed to install Linux at the end of the drive :/
Makes sense but booting was very slow compared to a ultra speedy 7 startup without Linux.
Live and learn I suppose

Mike, How come booting was slow. Have a look at this where I compare boot times of 8.1 and Mint in VMware Player.

A lot slower than that,
Not sure why clean install on a ssd is even kind of slow,
if you ever notice starting up on the top left of your screen the little - symbol flashing,
In 7 it flashes once and starts to load up ...
In Linux 17.1 the - flashes several times 4-5 to be exact,
Then I finally get the three green dots and the logon screen,
It's not terrible on it's own ssd almost twice as slow as 7 takes which is about 45 seconds last I tested which seems a lot faster than that in 7 but that's what the test shows,

Installing next to 7 it was pretty much the same except an added boot screen showing Linux and 7 so it was well over a minute to complete a startup of just Linux,
The laptop was getting a little hot running 17.1 so I ultimately reinstalled 7 and figured I just need a less bloated version,
The laptop being a dual core as well 32 bit 3 gb ram VM seems more like a dream than reality as far as doing it
Either way I intend to put another Linux dooda on it's own drive and see what happens with it that way,
I'm trying real hard not to push these machines too hard both are 6 y.o. and need to last.. no new build in sight
