Alright, so I know this an XP issue. But what I've noticed with build 7000 and now 7068, is that when I load up my computer and boot Windows 7 the sound works fine in 7. However when I go back to XP after having been in 7 ocassionally the sound is gone. I have a volume icon in my system tray and I can adjust the levels but no sound.

The only fix I have found for this was uninstalling my audio driver in XP and rebooting my PC and having XP find and install the driver itself. But even then sometimes it doesn't work and I have to do countless reboots before I could get the sound working again.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Dual booting XP & 7 - XP No sound Reply to Thread Log

I finally freed up a second HDD and installed the final release candidate of Windows 7 last night. Install went without a hitch, despite my low scoring hardware (onboard video gets a rating of 2.0!).

Tonight, I go back to XP Pro (with SP3 and all maintenance up to date) for my regular video chat via Windows Live Messenger. Surprise - no sound at my end of the conversation. The other party can see and hear me as normal. So I check my sound systems with speakers, headphones, etc - NO SOUND anywhere.

Then I boot back to Windows 7 and there is beautiful sound everywhere.

How does Windows 7 mess up the sound on Windows XP. They're on separate HDDs, not sharing virtual systems or anything.

I need the sound for my daily video chat sessions (in XP). There must be a fix for this, right?

First go into the XP device manager and look in the sound, video, and game controllers section there to see if anything is yellow marked. If not proceed into the Control Panel>Sound to run the configuration wizard in order to test the sound there.

If you find any yellow marked depending if this is onboard or a separate card sometimes all you have to do is right click on the item to choose the update driver option and have Windows do it's own search. That will force Windows to perform it's own reinstall to some extent in order to see the drivers made active again.

(don't you just love XP for all the hassles?!)

weird....if its a true dual-boot one OS should have no effect on the other.

I dual-boot xp and win7 and have no issues. I have a 125gig harddrive that I split into two 59gig partitions. When I boot into either xp or win7 I can see the other partition and even open the drive and grab files/folders if i wanted.

but again drivers are not shared when dual-booting.....I think your issue has to do with drivers or hardware issue that just happened to have an issue. I do not think win7 had anything to do with it breaking.

Andy.....and Roy

After you uninstall the audio drivers if you click the "scan for hardware changes" at the top of the device manager XP should find and reinstall the audio drivers. You won't have to reboot XP.

Just figured it would save you a few min of wasted time. :)

I previously had both 7 betas setup with a quadruple boot with an existing XP/Vista dual boot and never saw one OS related clash. It was simply getting the drivers on in the 64bit beta at first that was interesting! :D

In XP once and awhile there the sound would simply drop off as well as drivers for other devices where you simply needed to have them refreshed since they would tend to get made inactive at times. Let Windows do the walking there.

Update - just to add to the confusion.
Last night, I deleted the audio drivers and tried the scan for new hardware. It reinstalled the drivers. Still no sound. Rebooted XP - still quiet. Powered down and watched the F1 race from Japan then went to bed. This morning, I power it up -to XP, and there is sound again.

Don't know who the magic genie is who sneaked in overnight and fixed everything but I'll definitely keep very detailed notes as I switch in the future. I need to be able to count on the sound being there.

PS - I'm not new to booting multiple systems. Usually I use GAG to select between 3 Windows, 2 Kubuntu and a recovery system. For this Windows 7 testing, I've simplified it to just the two Windows images and no GAG. But if I have too much trouble switching transparently, I'll need to build another test machine just for Windows 7. (not my first choice obviously)

Apparently once you shut down and started up the system there the drivers only then were loaded by way of the startup item for sound pointing to the registry entries for the drivers instructing Windows to load them normally. Once you reinstall any drivers it's usually best to restart the system anyways to insure they are made active by Windows for any hardwares or addon devices.

Often sound would be knocked in XP here when something crashed whether game or media requiring a full restart to see everything loaded normally again. Vista came along and corrected a great deal of those problems while 7 is definitely the long awaited Windows!

Glad to you got that cleared there however since XP was always a bit of annoying in that area. :D

No Sound in XP in dual boot with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 to a separate hard drive with XP already on the first drive. My sound worked in XP before installing Win7 but no sound after installing 7. I uninstalled my sound drivers several times then reinstalled them but that didn't work. In Device Manager there is an exclamation mark sign next to my sound device. This problem occurs with my soundblaster audigy es and the realtek onboard sound. When I try to let windows update it it says that it can't find my device. The driver software from Asus says no device found. I booted Windows 7 and the sound works fine. I then uninstalled the drivers in W7 and reinstalled them but that didn't work. I install the Windows 7 drivers in Windows 7 and the WinXP drivers in Win XP. I have shut down and rebooted the PC several times with no change.

Hello warriorb1 Welcome to SF!

If your onboard sound is enabled in the bios that will cause immediate problems with any expansion card added since that will conflict. The yellow marks in Sound, Video, and game controllers simply shows that XP didn't fully detect and install the drivers.

While in the DM you can right click on the yellow marked item there and select uninstall followed by a full system restart to allow for a fresh detection of the card with the onboard turned off. You should then see a working install when noticing a new "other devices" listing in the DM showing that the card is being detected. You then simply run the installer for the update to have Windows install and make those active.

I removed my soundcard before re-enabling the onboard sound to see if the problem was with the card. This did not change anything. When the card is in and the onboard sound is disabled no sound in XP. When the card is out and onboard sound is on no sound in XP.

working now

The onboard sound is now working. I guess I just didn't try enough times to install the drivers. Now if I could get the Soundcard working instead that would be great. I uninstalled the drivers and tried to install them several times before it started working. I'll see if this continues until then thanks.

You likely had a need to clean of the Creative drivers in order to get the onboard going again. For adding the card back in you first disable the onboard in the bios and in the device manager as well as before shutting down to reinstall the card.

You want Windows to fully detect the new hardware it will prompt for in order to see a good reinstall of the Creativer set. The older XP updates were often more tricky to get on then seen with Vista and now 7. Downloading to a folder for storage and running the individual items for the audio console launcher as well as the driver set will usually see better results.

Hardware issue ?

Maybe we need to ask a hardware engineer to comment on this problem. In my case at least, the problem does not exist ...IF... I always power down the computer after running Windows 7. In that case, any OS that boots next has no trouble with sound. I believe the problem lies in what the various drivers (Windows 7 vs XP) do to the sound card (onboard or separate card) when they initialize it for their use.

My theory is that the Windows 7 drivers do ?something? to the sound card itself that is not reset by the following driver and survives soft reboots until there is a power down.

Is there a sound card engineer in the house?

Nada! When booting into one version nothing is being loaded from the other except if you are booting into XP using the 7 boot option briefly 7 being the newer version to start with.

The correct driver set for the version of Windows being booted into are then loaded into memory. The important is simply to get Windows to install the drivers and make them active. Apparently something knocked them out in XP which is nothing new for the older version there.

andythecurefan will simply have to make the drivers and application side are totally uninstalled and followed by a full restart to see that those are cleared out of memory. Once he can look in the device manager and not see anything yellowed out there the next step is going into the sound configuration wizard in XP.

But we'll have to wait to see how he made out there since he hasn't specified what he is using for sound there as far as onboard or addon expansion card.

Soundcard Drivers won't load

I have tried several times to get the my soundblaster audigy es to work but the drivers won't even load. After running the driver setup program and rebooting then looking in add/remove programs the drivers don't show up. If I try to load the drivers through Add hardware it says it can't find the drivers to load. I have tried older driver versions as well as the newest driver version all of which say they are compatible with XP while the new ones are compatible with 7. It also says that the data is invalid. I have even tried the Audigy Support Pack 3.5. This was able to install the driver for Creative Gameport but the Audigy drivers stiil won't install. The only thing I can think of is that Win7 installed something in the bootloader that is causing this. I have uninstalled the entries in Device Manager several times then rebooted but I get the same effects.

Once you have the drivers unpacked from the first attempt you can use the right click update drivers option while in the DM there to select the manually choose from a list of hardwares. From the list you select the sound, video, and game controllers item and try to get XP to install them once you manually browse to the folder the Creative installer created for the driver sub folder.

The other option of course is letting Windows automatically search for the drivers while you usually have to specify the type of hardware for this to work. The only thing 7 does is start up long enought to bring up the boot options screen and has no further activity once you select XP and boot into the older version. There's no active processes for 7 running to interfere with anything on xp.

Manual Reboot Didn't Work

I tried the manual reboot and that didn't work either. I tried before to have XP search for the drivers, it finds them tries to install them but then stops and says there was a problem. It says the data is invalid. I have tried redownloading the drivers and that still doesn't work. I am starting to think that the only option is a full reinstall of XP and 7.

It was on for about 2 years. I just installed Win7 this week. The next time I booted into XP this problem appeared. It is the only driver that is doing this.
