Solved Dual Monitor "ping pong"

ASUS P8Z77-V LX has an on board INTEL HD 4000 Video that has VGA, DP, DVI-D, HDMI, so I thought we need another monitor on this thing.

I hooked up various combinations and it flash screens on boot up but once booted would not recognize a second monitor.

It had the "Generic windows driver" installed, so I got the latest one from ASUS and it seems to be installed.

....however, this is where it gets really weird ....

Both monitors display stuff, but original monitor goes black and then active every 4 seconds and the computer beeps every time it does it.

If I drag something into the original monitor it goes back to the other one in 4 seconds.

If I look at the control panel it displays that 1 display is present and then 2 are present and then back to 1. The identify feature works as well.

Its like my PC has gone blonde (it can't seem to figure out what it is.)

If I remove the cable to the added monitor I can revert to the initial 1 monitor system that works OK. If I plug in the second monitor it reverts to the ping pong mode.

This looks like a driver issue, but maybe its a bios thing. I'm out of ideas.

Did you try with another cable? Try removing your original monitor and see if the new one keep getting disconnected.

I checked the motherboard manual, and as long as you aren't using one connection on the DP/RGB port, you can indeed hook two monitors to it.

As long as you're using the HDMI, VGA, or DVI-D outputs, you may have to enable the dual monitor setup in BIOS for it to work. Check the "Initiate iGPU" setting in BIOS to make sure it's enabled.

I believe I enabled the iGPU in the bios when I first started this when the microsoft standard driver was installed, I check again to make sure.

The main monitor is a VGA. My options for the second monitor are Display Port and DVI-D. Obviously different cables are involved. Both cause the same problem. I have tried two different DVI-D monitors.

I will try a DP and a DVI-D set up and see what happens.

Problem solved!!!!

If you connect a DVI-D and a Display port monitor they work as expected. You can even leave the VGA plugged in as well, with no ill effects. The VGA remains OFF, with the other 2 monitors being active.

In my application I will occasionally need use just the VGA screen. That requires powering off the DP, but the cable has to be removed from the DVI-D monitor for the VGA to work alone. Otherwise you get the ping pong effect going on between the 2 monitors.

Definitely one of the weirdest video anomalies I've run into.
