I have this problem connecting my laptop to a second monitor.
I had a basic version of vista then upgraded to windows 7 ultimate

When i plug in the second monitor, i can get them to have twin monitors (having both screens the same) but when i click on extend, the laptop screen turns off and the second monitor just goes to the extended display.

i have tried all the settings on the mobility centre and still nothing.
My friend suggested something about an upgraded driver, but couldn't elaborate.

TL;DR
Laptop screen turns off and extra monitor just has extended display, how do i fix it?

here is what is on my screens, apart from the left screen (laptop monitor) does not show up.
i have control of the right screen but the laptop monitor switches itself off.
