Dual monitor setup on GPU and CPU

Hi.

I want to use two monitors for two different scenarios:
1: Gaming on screen 1, connected through HDMI to my GPU, ASUS GTX 980 Strix, and browsing on screen 2, connected through VGA to my CPU/Motherboard
2: Working on both screen 1+2, while screen 1 is connected through HDMI to my GPU, ASUS GTX 980 Strix, and browsing on screen 2, connected through VGA to my CPU/Motherboard.

I've set my BIOS to enable IGPU, or whatever it's called, to supporth monitors when connected through both GPU and CPU, but can only get 1 of the monitors to work.

Please help

You can`t do that, just use the GPU.

Why would you buy a 980 and not want to use it for all your monitors ???????????

I just borrowed an old monitor from a friend, it only has VGA and DVI outputs, and I don't have a DVI cable at the moment

EDIT:
I've now tried to connect both monitors to my motherboard, 1 through HDMI and the other throug VGA. However, in the display settings, it only shows as 1 screen though, can't "widen" the background, and make it two separate screens..

Make sure "Extend these displays" is chosen in screen resolution.

I don't get that option, since it tells me, that I only have 1 screen connected?
I've tried to click 'Register' yet nothing happens

How do you know the monitor even works ?

Did you test 1 at a time to make sure they both work ?

The vga may be cutting out when you hook up using the hdmi output from the motherboard, just wait til you get a dvi cable to hook up the other monitor.

Yeah, I did test them one at a time, where they worked, and I can get the same picture on both monitors at the same time.

Aight, is a VGA> DVI adapter good enough, or does it have to be a DVI cable?

DVI sockets on a pc come in 2 flavors - DVI-D just carries digital, DVI-I has both analog and digital (I = integrated). If you have a DVI-I socket on a mobo or gfx card, you can use an adapter to hook up a VGA monitor. Otherwise, to go from analog to digital (or vice versa) you need some electronics ie a converter.

HDMI > DVI can just be a cable, since both are digital.

Do not waste time with adapters just to get the other monitor working, what`s the rush ?

By now you should have gotten a dvi cable since you siad you already have an hdmi cable.

DVI cable to one monitor
HDMI cable to the other

That`s it, done.
