Dual monitor support?

Here I would looking for something that works on some of the latest titles as well as other things besides games since I also tried running things at the 2880x900 resolution as well but with an ATI driven card.

Presently I'll be taking a look at the new Ultramon 3.0.7 beta software. Download UltraMon Beta

That immediately freed up some taskbar space on the primary display real fast now seeing the taskbar extended over to the second one!

Hey, I have a problem with my dualscreen in windows 7. It works in Vista, but in Windows 7 I can't get it to work.. I tried it with Catalist Control Centre and in Windows 7 but it doesn't work. I already Downloaded the latest drivers.

Hello Balc0 Welcome to the Se7enforums!

The problem there is so fast and easy to correct you won't believe you missed it! First go into the Control Panel>Display to select the one of the three options seen there. Once you have one of the panels highlighted you simply choose from:
Extend desktop to this display,
Duplicate desktop on 1 and 2,
Duplicate desktop on 1 and 3(3rd monitor required).

From there you can use a program like DisplayFusion or Ultramon for stretching a single background or have a separate wallpaper on each. I run an ATI card here and had to that out here when first going to set a dual display!

Hey, thx for your help but I also tried that, but whene i selected extend and then apply it just didn't extend. But now I have 2 screens working,and I didn't have to do anything, when I reinstald windows 7, because it had crasht and it wouldent start, it automaticly extended my screen.

That will still be useful to know at some point. When booting you'll notice one will see something come up on the screen just before the other as well as the post tests and initial startup. Once the desktop you then see the stretch across.

The Catalyst will now allow you to check off the "reduce the DVI frequency for high resolution displays" and/or the "Alternate DVI operational mode" options for each separately as well as adjust the image scaling. You can select which will be the #1 primary and #2 secondary display as well.

Secondary display resoution

Hi,

I can see lots of intelligent people on this forum and hope that you can help. I have an ATI Radeon 3600 running under Windows 7 64 bit. I have two LG Flatron W2252S displays attached. My problem is this: I get the option to choose the native 1680x1050 pixel resolution for one monitor, but not the other. Windows 7 seems to see one monitor as a plug'n'pray monitor, but the other shows as non p'n'p even though both are exactly the same. I get the option to choose the correct resolution for both when using Vista or XP (all of which are running on this machine). I have tried:

1) Downloading the LG driver for the monitor and manually updating the driver for both displays
2) Using the latest Catalyst software and trying all the tricks in there
3) Praying

None of the above has worked. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate something else to try. I hope that this isn't an early Win7 bug...

Hello dar69 Welcome to the Se7enforums!

Two things you try there making sure the second monitor is functioning as it should would be going through the setup option for the monitor itself and a trip into the Control Panel>Display section there for configuring the two LGs. You can elect to clone one onto the other or extend the primary onto the secondary display using the "Change Display Settings" option there.

The screen here will show how that looks when clicking on the link for that once in the Display section. Note the Display is the monitor either 1 for primary or 2 for secondary. Under that you set the default resolution dollowed by the orientation and then onto the multiple displays setting for duplication on 1+2, 1+3 if a 3rd monitor is present, and the preferred Extend desktop to this diplay option.

Sadly it didn't help, but I seem to have found a solution. For some reason the EDID information for the second screen was showing a maximum resolution and refresh rate that were different to that of the first screen. When I override the EDID and make the maximum resolution and refresh rate the same as the first monitor, I get the option to select the 1680 x 1050 resolution! How very strange and extremely annoying!

Thanks for your efforts to help. I hope that posting this here will save someone else the two days of messing around it's taken me to fix the problem.

I'm sure it will especially for that brand of monitor. While many probably would only need a quick trip into the Control Panel to make the setting changes there this should be a help for those who run into similar if not the same with mulimonitor setups at first. Glad to hear you have that sorted out there!

I, I am not quite sure what he is asking but I have a quite simmiliar question so I try it here frist.

I don't want to use my second monitor as a second "windows screen", I want both monitors to be used as one. :sarc:

I don't want a clone, but I want to see the task bar go from the left side of the left screen to the right side of the right screen

Now I have windows extend on the second screen.

You'll have to use a third party up to extend it, search the forum, there's two being developed currently.

The Intel Video driver with my very humble laptop works fine like this -- choose extend desktop then you've got One desktop - depending on how you configure it it works either way round (L ==>R or R==>L) .

With different Video cards you should get similar options for dual monitors - depending on the capacity of the video card however you might not be able to get FULL resolution on ALL the monitors - especially if you want to try with 4.

Extended desktops is probably an option on all decent video cards these days.

Most good cards at this late date will see two DVI type outputs for primary and secondary display. The software for the card plays an important role while the display settings in the Control Panel still have to be tended to there.

As you can see when comparing the screen there from the laptop with that from a desktop running a mid range card a 3rd item for configuring a 3rd display is supported there. With the higher resolutions the onboard video memory requirements go up some as well as how much vpu power is seen.

The advantage with 7 however is now seeing the vpu and cpu being instructed to work together rather then the vpu working and waiting while the cpu handles the load there.

Wondering if anyone has had this happen?

I have dual boot with xp 32 and win7 64 installed. I have dual monitors which i run on both os's. With the primary monitor on the left and the secondary monitor on the right. The classic set up i suppose, anyway from boot the left monitor start and the right stays off. This is also the same if I were to continue and boot into xp it would stay the same with the monitors in the layout as I have them on my desk left panning to right. This as been the same before when I had vista installed before putting windows 7 on. But when I boot into Win7 it then switched the layout of the screen. At first I done the normal by entering display settings and moving the monitors to how they should be. I expected monitor 1 to be on the left, but it stayed on the right and just made monitor two the primary monitor. This is fine and I can live with it. But I just find it weird that in start up and xp it is the way it has been set up and in win7 is moves the dvi port around.

If anyone has had this before and got it sorted I would love to know.

oh and sorry if i spelt anything wrong, i was a last minute before bed post.

Hello nairnmonster Welcome to the Se7en Forums!

Typically expect to see only one monitor active with a display until reaching the Windows desktop regardless of the version. This is the normal signal path.

For dual display settings you can have one set as the primary or see both clone each other by the options found in the "Control Panel>Display>Change Display Settings" in 7. The images for panels seen there allow you to set which will be the default there.

The images here will show the dropdown options where you simply click the apply button once you cnange back and forth between monitors. The second shows how a 3rd party program like Display Fusion or the one used here, Ultramon, can even decide what wallpaper will be seen on each one when choosing the stretch desktop option.

External monitor not working

I have a Dell XPS M1530 that i recently upgraded from Windows Vista Home to Windows 7 Pro (full installation of Windows 7, as "upgrade" option is not available in this scenario).

I also have a Dell 22" S2209W connected by VGA. It worked fine until i installed Windows 7. When I plug it in, my Dell laptop does not recognize the monitor and the external monitor goes into Power Save mode. It also cannot see the monitor when in the Screen Resolution window.

Please help!! I miss my dual monitors

Hello localhaj Welcome to the Se7en Forums!

When first done installing 7 with any dual or triple monitor setup you have to proceed into the Control Panel>Display section in order to make a few setting changes like "stretching" as well as seeing if the external monitor is shown in the "Change display settings" sub section there.

Once you have both active you can even custom assign two or more wallpapers either with DisplayFusion or UltraMon as well as extend a taskbar to the second display. Hopefully this is all you will need there.

In the screen resolution settings, just grab the monitor and move it to the other side.

1. If Control Panel is not already visible, click the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Display icon.
2. On the Settings tab, select the monitor icon for the presenter's monitor (usually 1), and then select the Use this device as the primary monitor check box.

If this check box is selected and unavailable, the monitor is already designated as the primary monitor. Only one monitor can be selected as the primary monitor at a time. When you select a different monitor icon and complete step 2, this setting for the previous monitor is automatically cleared and becomes accessible again.
3. Select the secondary monitor icon, and then select the Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor check box.

The wallpaper can be different. DisplayFusion or Ultamon are two programs for seeing that done. They each have their customization tools for positioning optional buttons and other things but only remember custom profiles for each monitor in use.
