DVD burner, buying advice?

which brand to go?
There are five brands sold in the nearby computer shop.
LiteOn, LG, Asus, Pioneer and Plextor.
Their prices are close but Plextor and Pioneer are at the higher ends while LiteOn and LG are at the lower end. They are all 24X

I need to burn a lot of DVD+R discs to give away to people, and I sometimes burn discs as a backup of precious files. I want to reduce the chance of burning bad discs or discs with incorrect/imperfect files.

afaik, non-bluray burner technology is pretty much stagnant by now.

Either should work fine and reliably. I have a ton of LG ones that work fine, so that would be my choice, unless you need specific features.

Nowadays, DVD burners are pretty much throwaway commodities, and if you take close look, there are really only a handful of OEMs with a lot of different brand names slapped onto them.

Many of the differently branded units have the same pressed steel top panel.
LiteOn, Asus, Memorex are all made by LiteOn, for example. I consistently got poor performance from this group.

Instead, I bought Samsung/TSST (Toshiba) burners for my machine. They work well so long as I connect them to SATA ports using IDE mode. I really liked my Pioneer burners but they got fried when my PSU died a few years ago. Since then Pioneer got out of the OEM business and just rebrands other companies' products, as does Plextor.

I do a lot of audio CD burning, since I have a recording studio. My TSST (Samsung) burners and a commercial division LG model are what I'm using.

But the first thing you need to know is whether your system requires a SATA or PATA (IDE) interface drive.
