I have a DVD/CD drive (Sony/Optiarc 7200s) that is not working. Here's the steps I've taken:

Device Manager says that the drive is there, but will not start
Tried updating driver from web - got the same driver that I had.
Rebooted, still same error
Replaced the drive, repeated above step, got same error.
Tried putting the data cable into a different port - same error
Replaced the data cable, same error.

I'm completely lost, any suggestions?

From what I've read about this problem it can be fixed by uninstalling iTunes which seems to somehow be causing the problem. This of course assumes that you have iTunes installed.

Further down the page in the link below Microsoft explains that using these programs can cause problems with the DVD drive.
iTunes software by Apple
Nero software by Nero Inc
Roxio Creator software by Sonic Solutions
Zune software by Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us#win7fix

If that doesn't work you can try Microsoft Answers about this particular problem. :)

Perfect solution to the problem. I didn't notice any problems after installing iTunes, but apparently, I never had looked at the drive again until a few weeks later.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help.

iTunes also causes problems with network connections because it installs the Bonjour service which is famous for wrecking havoc on Windows machines world wide. A little gift from Jobs I think.

If you really need iTunes you might try a different version other than one you had installed because I read it doesn't happen with every version.

DVD/CD Drive will not... 06-04-2012 02:14 PMaintnorock You, sir, are a genius. I uninstalled iTunes and it started working even without re-booting. How can iTunes get away with crap like this? And how did you know that was it?

Thanks for the Rep, glad you have it up and working again. ;)
