DVD Drive Crashes The OS (this is different)

Hello friends,

Read the forums and found nothing about it so here it is, sorry if I missed something



XP SP3 User, never seen, never touched Vista.

Installed W7 32 in PC with an Athlon XP 2400+ 1.99 GHz 1GB ram
EliteGroups KT 600-A Motherboard
Have 2 hard drives both IDE
Made a dual boot system, each OS running on a different hard drive

Every piece of hardware was recognized and the drivers were ok and up to date. No errors detected by the OS

Have 2 DVD Drivers
-an IDE Lite On DVD RW LH - 20A1H (this is the bootable one)
-an HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH20NS10 SCSI


Everything works great, but everytime I tried to use the SCSI DVD drive, the system crashes. Blue screen, and so on...

the message reads as follows

both DVD drives work flawlessly in XP. :sarc:


Uninstalled and disabled the conflicting drive with no result, tried an older driver, the same thing.

W7 tried to find a solution after the first crash with no success

One more thing about it, I've changed the autorun settings and the same dvd driver works fine when reading a music Cd with VLC ( I installed it later, and changed the default settings)

What can I do to make both drivers to work?

The only new thing in my system is W7, and I really like the feel of it, but I want my two drivers to work

This is really a BSOD question more than a hardware one in many aspects and thus needs to be looked at by some one who knows how to analyse and fix BSODs, such as @niemiro. In my limited knowledge on this it would most likely be a driver problem. Try uninstalling both device drivers then rebooting back into Seven. See if that works. I must admit I'm
no expert on this but will drop someone a who knows how to deal with BSODs a line tommorow.

Thanks, I will luck forward to your reply. Going to try remove the drivers now. The only problem is that I don't actually get a BSOD.

Edit: Unistalling Drivers and hten rebooting didn't fix the problem =/

Have you tried updating the firmware for your drives - you go from one OS to the next and it fails - definitely worth trying. If the firmware is wriiten for a previous Os eg vista you can get it to install by using compatibility mode:
To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Please confirm this is your drive :

• The drive is displayed in
Windows 2000/XP : [Control Panel]-[System]-[Hardware]-[Device Manager]-
[DVD/CD-ROM-drives]
Windows Vista : [Control Panel]-[Device Manager]-[DVD/CD-ROM-drives]
• 32-bit is displayed in [Control Panel]-[System]-[Performance]
■ If the drive is not recognized by your computer, please check the following items.
• If an indicator is displayed on the IDE controller in [Control Panel]-
[System]-[Device Manager]-[Hard Disk Controller], you will need to contact
your PC’s manufacturer or the motherboard’s manufacturer and get the
appropriate IDE controller driver.
■ Run Add New Hardware in Control Panel to let PC search again for new device.

Thanks for the help, I will try that tonight but my Drive is the S15 but it should have the same basics. The only downside is that there are no drivers for it on there website for some reason =/, I will keep you posted later tonight when I get home.

I have contacted Niemiro, who is very good at this sort of thing (unfortunately he doesn't have a Seven forums account yet so I'm posting this on his behalf).

Please do the following:

Please can you go to "C:\Windows\Minidump";
Copy it to the desktop;
Compress it (if you do not know how to do this Niemiro recommends using the free program 7-zip which you can download from http://www.7-zip.org/);
upload it here for Niemiro to have a look at.

Looks like its not the firmware then -I checked the site for the S15 also - being the later model it probably has the latest firmware - is it a usb drive? If not you better follow Osholt's advice. The only other suggestion is you might try uninstalling the device in device manager, and rebooting, and let windows redetect the device, and reload the driver.

If it is a usb device there is a fix if you meet the requirements listed on the page :
You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM

I can't find the minidump directory =/ Is there a certain thing you need to do for it to be created or can I use a DxDiag?

Edit: CONFUSING it now wants to work =/ Might be when I unistalled the driver 2 days ago. Thanks all for the help.

Hi,

Finally set up an account!

Anyway, this is probably due to crash dumping not enabled. This tutorial is for Vista, but it should all still be exactly the same for Seven.

Follow this tutorial BUT change the dumping option FROM "None" TO "Small Memory Dump (64kb)", unlike in the tutorial: Disable Memory Dump Files and Save HDD Space in Vista | Windows Vista Maintenance | Windows Tools, Help & Guides

Then wait for another BSOD and upload the Minidump files (there should now be a minidump file)
