Hey, I recently install windows 7 RC and when I tried to put in the cd to install some sound drivers my computer just froze. explorer.exe just stops responding whenever I put any disc in the drive. If I open the drive to take the disc out it instantly unfreezes and it's completely fine! HELP! I have tried reinstalling drivers and several other things and I'm at a loss.

Hi twinkyman90, and welcome to Sevenforums.

Im thinking your problem might be caused by either a badly scratched/damaged cd or a malfunctioning cd/dvd drive.
Does this happen when you put in only that one cd, or does this happen with any cd you put in the drive?

Welcome to SevenForums, twinkyman90.

This might be a long shot, but make sure the cables are securely connected to the drive. I had this problem before and it turns out the IDE cable (sounds so old now) was a bit loose. After I re-fastened it, the drive worked fine again.

If your cables are securely fastened, it may mean your DVD drive is faulty.

Thanks for the quick reply guys! It's not just the one disk, I tried several, and I don't think it could be the drive because I have XP and 7 installed and it works fine in XP.

My computer does the same exact thing.

The dvd drive works in xp, but will not read any disc and will freeze the computer in Win 7.

It may have started after doing the windows updates, but not sure.

I have a samsung dvd writer, ide internal.

Try to disable Autoplay...

Just type Autoplay on search and uncheck the box...

Do you have nero installed?

Also , you can look for a firmware update for your drive...

Check and make sure your transfer mode is set to DMA

You can also try changing the drive to Primary.

the other day I uninstalled the dvd driver, and then scanned for new hardware, which reinstalled the driver. After this the dvd drive worked, after reboot it did not work again.

Today i just uninstalled the driver again, reinstalled, and the drive worked.
Rebooted and the drive is still working. hmmm

may have an answer..really late but might help somone later on...

i had this issue, at first didn't even realize that the dvd drive was what was slowing things down until i tried using freemake to burn a dvd and noticed it sped right up (as did everything else) when i ejected the disc. then i proceded to try every program (most of which are scams and/or malware including all of them recomended here) until finally i said "hmm, maybe it's the obvious i thought was too dumb to work" and tried a different disc like the one fella suggested, and poof, low and behold it worked! then of course, being the parinoid i am, i started dreaming up an evil plot against me involving chinese terrorists manufacturing malware infected sony discs (which are not made in china, but whatever) NOPE upon further inspection of the disc i noticed a HUGE deep scratch, i had no idea a scratched dvd could wreak such havoc on the O.S. but apparently it can. so if anyone else has this issue CHECK THE DISC IT'S PROBABLY SCRATCHED OR HAS A FACTORY DEFECT! hope that helps somone someday:sarc:
