DVD not recognised intermittently by Windows 7 preofessional 64bit

Hi there,

I have a Blu-Ray/DVD drive on my PC (its a brans new PC).

When I first start windows up the drive genreally seems to be recognised by windows (i.e. I can see it in windows explorer), however at some point windows stops recognising the DVD drive forcing me to restart the PC if I want to get my DVD out.

Can someone please advise?

I realise there is a fix where you change the registry settings, but given that the DVD srive works when I restart the PC I'm not sure that fix if applicable here?

As it is a brand new computer it will be covered by a warranty, so for that reason you might want to have a word with your reseller to get the drive replaced free of charge.

I agree, rather than fussing with it and possibly voiding your warranty, return it as soon as possible.

That is an option but I want to ty and establish if it's a hardware or software issue first. I am loathed to loose the PC for any amount of time as I really need it day in day out.

If I was a betting man I'd say it's a hardware problem, which could be something as simple as a loose SATA cable or loose power cable, given the fact it's an intermittent and not a permanent problem.

It would be remiss of us to suggest any fix that would invalidate your warranty and being without your computer for what should be a short period of time must be preferable to a drive you can't use or data loss of any kind.

Take you point.

In any case I will stick with a little longer in th hope that I can identify the factors which are triggering the DVD drive disappearing. What programs I'm using at the time etc, lenght of run time before issue arrises etc.

In the mean time if anyone has experienced a similar issue I'd still love to hear about it.

If you have a desktop computer, you might want to crack the box open and check that the front bezel is seated correctly.

My DVD-ROM stopped working recently, and that's exactly what happened, meaning the front bezel wasn't making good contact with the optical-drive switch.

However, do be careful while your computer is under warranty as even opening the case can invalidate the guarantee so I'd still read your paperwork and/or get in touch with your reseller first.

those are the symtoms i usually see when i drive is about to fail, whether it's new or old sometimes they just break.

i would contact the seller first as they may be able to get it replaced without need of the system or be able to replace it themselves and send yours back independently.

as it's still under warranty i'd be very carefull about how you proceed as some manufacturers are very very picky when it comes to warranty jobs.
