DVD+R discs still blank after burning

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, and my desktop is a HP IQ500. I have recently had the problem of my cd/dvd drive (TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-T633A) not being able to burn dvds. I am able to do everything else with this drive, such as playing cds, playing dvds, recognizing media and blank discs, and burning cds; but when i try to burn dvds, nothing is put on the disc, it is still blank. i have always used DVD+R discs (either Sony or Memorex) without any problems, until now. I am using Convert X to DVD, but i have also tried on different programs, such as Xilisoft creator and ImToo DVD creator. I am also seeing that when I put a blank dvd in, it drastically slows down some programs, and causes my dvd burning programs to freeze often. I have not tried using the same disc and program on a different computer, and I have not tried using different discs on my computer. Device manager says that there are no problems with my CD/DVD drive. Are there any options that I can change on my CD/DVD drive that will make a difference, or would I have to buy a new CD/DVD drive?

Try a firmware update for the dvd drive - it may need to be installed in compatibility mode with the OS it was written for.
To install a driver, program or firmware in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

See if there is a firmware update here :

I just had a look at one of the models listed and there is a application HP MediaSmart DVD Application Update have you installed this? I couldn't see a firmware update for the dvd drive.

If that doesnt work uninstall the burning software you installed, or do a system restore around it - that way you can undo the restore, and you wont have to reinstall anything if that doesnt fix it. Window 7 comes with its own burning software etc. which works, so after a restore try it - you just right click the drive for options, or to burn a dvd open DVD Maker - you can also download movie maker its a part of the windows live suite -

Do this if the above has no effect - for intel - if you have intel chipset and AHCI enabled in the bios download the intel matrix storage manager and install - its also available on your driver page :

Hi does anyone know how i can update this dvd drive on the hp iq506 touchscreen computer, tsst corp cddvdw ts-t633a dvd drive. Its only reading as a cd rom and i am using nero 8 and dvds dont play on regular dvd players.

Are you saying that the PC's DVD player cannot read a factory-pressed DVD? Problem is often the cause of multiple burn applications. I would remove all burn applications. Run the reg fix. Reload Nero and retest. You may have a bad DVD laser.

If the drive can read burned DVDs but the burned DVDs is not playable on a home player, then you need to make sure that Nero is set to burn in DVD-ROM (ISO) or DVD-Video mode. If you use DVD+R media, then you need to set the booktype to DVD-ROM prior to the burn. Note that some burners cannot set the booktype to DVD-ROM. Only other option is to use DVD-R media. Always burn at 8x max. I prefer 4x.
