Solved dvd rw drive in laptop

the drive plays cd music ok using disc , today I tried to install a cannon printer using their original disc , but drive will not pick the disc up so as I can install program. looked in help but no information for this particular problem .
at one point I was asked to format disc . did not do that it seemed wrong to me
any clues .
am using HP-processor Celeron dual core cpu 3500@210GHZ
ram 2.00gb
64 bit operating system

Help would be appreciated

The DVD-ROM may be getting old
The installation CD may be problematic

Can you check with another data CD? Also check the Install CD on another drive.

thanks for reply---put disc in other pc and it works --tried to play movie disc --no go .
Will replace dvd drive as you say drive is old
