When i bought the Asus one i bought a second Samsung just to give it a second try to the brand:

SH-224DB/BEBE - OEM



SLOW SLOW SLOW as the first one i bought last year.

I don't know if you guys burn double layer dvd's, but those 2 models fail miserably doing that.


What should i do know? Maybe a new Lite on perhaps? Sony i really miss you.

I don't know where you get your gear from Smiths but I get the impression Newegg is the place of choice in your part of the world - I am only guessing but these area few choices for DL burners

he he because of my comments i might give the impression i buy at the Jawa's disposal store lol!

But no i bought these units at the same place i have bought for the last 15 years, same place where i bought my reliable and fast sony drivers, to be sincere i was expecting these results with Asus and Samsung.

* The Asus unit can read dvd's and burn 4.7 GB dvd's without issue, problem happens when i try to burn a double layer Sony DVD. These Sony discs were the BEST on the market.

* The Samsung unit pretty much works, it can burn double layer discs without any issue, problem is if i want to intall windows 7 pretty much will take me, perhaps 40 minutes instead of 20, lame... It verifies burned dvd's at 6.5 x LOL

I'm not in the States so i can't buy at the new egg sadly, both units have a LOT of bad reviews but more positive than negative however who burns double layer dvd's nowadays? i bet we are just a few..

It's pretty sad to say goodby to Sony, i didn't even rip all my music collection yet... i guess i never will now.

I could still try an LG or a Lite on, don't know the models but know where to find one of each...

I am just curious as to why you want to burn to DL disks cos usually one uses them for films etc Mind you installing Windows over 40 mins is pretty ordinary and I am assuming you mean just the base system stuff not the updates etc .

As a general rule the slower one burns to and loads from a disk is better even though it is tedious because the data has less chance of being corrupted or altered missed etc ie burning say an ISO of a sytem at 8x is better than at 24x.

Now the Lite on I have had a few and they are really good and in fact I only swapped out the one in my Ivy Bridge build to a Samsung because the Samsung was a Blu ray and in my tiny mind because the laser uses a blue spectrum light it is more precise a beam than say the usual red spectrum ie it is narrower so more data / info can be put on the disk. Well that is as far as I know the principle for Blu ray films being a better picture / graphics because more data is and can be used to make up the graphics for example. But I stand to be corrected of course.

Well North America (mainland) is: Canada, The United States and Mexico not a first world country here mate so there you go...

Files are bigger and bigger each time i can store 2 4.7 discs in 1 double layer disc and save physical space. I collect music and video rarities generally, not movies.

Ok if 40 mins is the average time for installing Windows 7 base system, then using my old Sony drivers took me 20 minutes.

The burn at 8x was ok for the Samsung one (no more than 8x being a double layer disc) but checking at 6x? really?, also trying to perform a clean windows install....too slow IMO.

Guess i should give a try to a Lite on then, i have a 10 years old one, its the winner regarding noise, sounds like a blender when copying files to the HDD but perhaps a current one will perform better.

But definitely the ASUS has been the worst of them all, not being able to burn a double layer disc? fail.

Exactly, if it takes 40 minutes your optical drive sucks (In my case Samsung).

But, no drive made in the last 5 years will take 40 minutes.

Yeah some people, i think, assume Samsung performance is normal even good but if you try another brand you will notice the difference immediately at least for the models i have bought.

I might be using a flash drive for Windows 10, why not, memories are pretty cheap nowadays so maybe its the time for using one.

Still i need a decent optical DVD burner... i don't trust LG either (yeah i know MR untrustable guy here) but i bought two like 20 years ago both were DOA. Lite on next...

I downloaded this utility in order to perform burst rate tests in all my drivers.

I used a double layer Sony DVD with a Depeche Mode the videos release.

Burst rate: The burst rate is the highest possible speed at which data can be transferred to the drive.
This speed should be higher than the maximum rated speed of the drive.

Differences between these Burst rate values make the difference between installing windows 7 on 15 mins or more like even 40 mins for me!

Asus


Lite On


Pioneer


Samsung


Sony


Of course all these drivers are not clones (same features), the pioneer one for example is a blur-ray burner.

But the test works for my interests, and the winner is??? the oldest one, the lite on.

1) Lite On. The winner but the most louder. 53.7MB

2) Sony. Second place not as louder as the Lite on and excelent burst values. 49.2MB but its failing, the one that originated this thread.

3) Asus. Only 5MB less behind the Sony, 44.4MB nice right? but the bloody thing can't burn double layer Sony dvd's.

4) Samsung. 29.4MB, the lite on is 53.7Mb see my point why i don't like Samsung?, slow slow slow!. That's makes the difference between installing windows 7 on 15 and 40 minutes.

5) Pioneer. This came on the last place 24.2MB but again this is the only one that is also a blu-ray burner. I use it specifically to read and write blu-rays only.

Yep well it depends on what one calls installing I suppose - I mean getting the OS loaded and then the torrent of updates that invariably follow - they are the time consumers - so the first instance yes probably less than 20 mins with my Samsung (I have used most of the other brands too) and you have to remember other factors as well such as CPU speeds what hardware you have installed and network connections it does take time to load drivers for them too.

I think maybe the USB maybe the way to go if the optical is taking too long and I can pick up 4GB sticks for around $5 and $7 for an 8GB - in actual fact I just bought a brilliant SanDisk one - 16GB for $11 that has a connection "plug" one end for the computer and one for the android devices I am now using on the other end.

It is a pity the ISO we used to be able to get on Greg rockers tutorial has been taken away because it was always being updated with the latest updates shortening the entire install time.

The latest Windows 7 only has Service Pack 1 on it, you still have to install about 210 updates after installing Windows, I do not consider updates a part of the install process.

With a properly functioning dvd rom and a proper install disc Windows takes 15 minutes from start to where you enter your name.

A flash drive will be a bit quicker.

I did not time it with the new build, I wasn`t concerned. I just start the install and walk away

Once you click next you shouldn`t have to touch the machine until you see the screen to enter your name.

That's not ordinary, unless you are installing on a very very slow machine. Now the first instance takes you less than 20 minutes too? using a Samsung unit?

If it takes you less than 20 minutes, then it takes me 12 minutes. Well it took me, RIP my Sony unit.

Do you know the model and the burst rate of your Samsung unit? I really doubt your Samsung unit matches the Sony ones but i might be wrong....

The first unit appearing is a Samsung one, i've already tested that model twice, it's a pretty slow unit (i've already posted my results above).

Well I don't know the burst rate for the Samsung and frankly it is of little interest to me - no offence intended. If I have a few minutes to spare hen I will look at it but again whatever it is it really doesn't matter tome because the Samsung does the job and very efficiently.

All I know is that installing is a tedious affair and to be avoided whenever possible - my machines (6) all have different optical drives the tester has two generic brands as there is no identifying marks that I know of and they all install around the same time.

Then i assume is slow too, but it's ok if you are satisfied with it (i don't have an issue with that) but definitely i pass from Samsung and personally i don't recommend it.

Regarding Asus i would give a second try to the brand buying this if i could:

I might buy an updated Lite On drive this week, perhaps its good.

BTW that burst rate is what makes Windows 7 install faster (at least on my PC) i put the disc reboot and voila i could hear the burst speeds on my ex-Sony drive.

Instead, when i use the Samsung, pretty much is quiet all the time, almost 0 noise and hence low transfering speeds.
