DVI-HDMI monitor connection with an HD-TV

Hey guys, first post, quick question. I've got a PC running Windows 7 (64bit), and I use a Vizio HD-TV as a monitor. I've got 1 HDMI port, 1 DVI port, and 1 VGA port. Usually, I run an HDMI cable between the PC and television, and that works fine. However, I recently got some VR gear and now I need to free up that HDMI port - so I bought a DVI-to-HDMI cable, assuming all I'd have to do is plug in the new cable and there'd be no problems.

Can't get my TV to recognize the DVI-HDMI connection. I've tried running the DVI-HDMI cable to different HDMI ports on my TV, tried rebooting the PC with only the DVI-HDMI connected, tried poking around in the Display settings to see if Windows was recognizing the DVI connection as a separate monitor - no luck at all.

Any ideas?

When a monitor (or TV) powers up, it uses an auto-negotiation routine to detect what it is connected to. It seems like the DVI-HDMI cable is not allowing the relevant EDID information exchange between the PC's graphics card and the TV.

This leads me to believe that there is a connection missing in the cable/adapter. You might try a different adapter to see if it works better. Or you could try an HDMI monitor to see if it does the detection properly with the new cable. If it does, then the TV is the culprit. Not sure what you could do in that case, since there probably is no way to force the TV to detect the PC.

Crap, thanks. Don't have access to a spare HDMI monitor or separate adapter atm - just a few HDMI-HDMI cables and the DVI one.

not sure why a 780 would have any problem connecting to an HDTV via a DVI to HDMI cable.

I use a Monster DVI to HDMI cable to connect to my Sony Bravia once in a while, never an issue.

You know the HDMI port works on the tv, and I don`t think the problem would be the brand new cable. Although Bryan may be correct, I`ve never come across that issue, and I`ve connected my 980Ti to the Sony, once to an Insignia and once to a Samsung.

A 780 should handle up to 4 monitors. Somehow you`re gonna have to test that DVI port from the card, unless you know for sure that it works.
