DVI issue with Nvidia 6600GT

Hey all,

I'm having a bit of an issue. I have a xerox lcd which allows both vga and dvi inputs, a 6600GT with latest windows update drivers loaded and windows 7 RC1. Now, when I use a DVI cable only, the computer will boot up perfectly and the screen will show the windows loading symbol, but as soon as it fades and the desktop should pop up I get a "no signal" message and the monitor shuts off. After much searching I had the idea to plug in a dvi to vga converter to my card which makes everything work fine. The card has 2 DVI ports and I've tried both with the same results(No signal output through DVI but works when I plug in the DVI to VGA adapter in-line).

I would still like to actually use my DVI for what it is so does anyone have any ideas as to how I can remedy this situation?

Thanks for the help

I tried the driver you suggested and the problem still persisted(plugged in the vga adapter to type this)...on top of that for whatever reason that driver does not support my monitor's native 1440x900 resolution so I have to switch back to the window's update supplied one which did. I checked the refresh rates as well and they are ok at 60hz. Thanks though

Hi silver2wind and welcome to Se7en Forums

It could be a configuration setting on your monitor itself. What is the exact model number of it?

The monitor is a xerox xr6-19dw. I also tried downloading and installing the monitor's official driver but that did not seem to change a thing.

Here's my thinking so far, let me know if I could be wrong. This isn't a monitor issue because at boot and up until windows desktop is about to show the monitor shows in dvi mode and only then blanks out and says "no input", but if right then and there I plug in the vga adapter it'll work perfectly. For this same reason it also is not a cable issue.

I tried some odd shutdown routines involving unplugging the vga at a specific time and unplugging the monitor for 10 sec with dvi only in and then restarting everything, but that didn't work either.

Yeah, that's when the video driver is loaded. If you boot into safe mode where no video driver is applied (besides standard vga), I am guessing it would work fine.

Not sure how to help further, but if it was me, I'd probably clean the system as much as possible of all ATI stuff. Remove drivers, apps, clean registry, find files by hand and delete etc...

Then reinstall either the previously mentioned beta or WHQL driver from NVIDIA's site.

Before you do that though, do you have another DVI monitor to try? Perhaps from another system?

but if right then and there I plug in the vga adapter it'll work perfectly. For this same reason it also is not a cable issue.

That's sound thinking for the most part, but possibly the DVI uses a wire in the cable that is not necessary for VGA to work when you have the converter going. And that wire is the one that is broken, or the connections of it on either could be broken. Have you checked it out by looking if all the pins aren't bent?

Have a look at the monitor settings. Bring up the monitor's menu and look for an option to set the input to Digital. My LCD has an Analogue Vs Digital option.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I uninstalled all of the nvidia drivers and the monitor drivers and started from scratch again but ended up with the same result. It seems I HAVE to use the windows update driver in order to even get the resolution of 1440x900 that my screen requires, the newer Nvidia driver just doesn't have the option.

I wish I had another monitor to test, but unfortunately I don't.

The monitor menu makes no mention of selecting the input. There is a separate "auto" button on the screen which I use to switch between inputs when I have my laptop and desktop plugged in (That doesn't apply to this problem as only the desktop is plugged in) and pressing the auto button with only one input in the monitor has no effect.

FWIW I think the problem is with the screen and not the card/PC. Can you borrow another LCD with a DVI input to test?

But if it was the monitor why does it work with a DVI signal all the way up until the windows loading symbol shows up?

Either way I've been wanting to get a dvi to hdmi converter to try the computer hooked up to the tv, I guess now's a good a time as any.

Since the screen works when you install a VGA adapter and use the VGA input it suggests that the screen's DVI input is being turned off. Your video card has two DVI outputs. If the signal were being cutoff at the card I figure the VGA adapter wouldn't make any difference.

I'm surprised that the screen menu doesn't offer you a VGA/DVI toggle since all of the dual input LCDs I've worked on have that feature. The screen should auto-detect the signal, but it should also be possible to manually select the input.

I have exactly the same problem only with CoreI7 system (ASUS P6T DELUXE) and GTX260. There is a signal on DVI during all boot sequence till nvidia driver is loaded then I get "no signal". I've tried 2 different LCD monitors and 1 HDTV, HDMI and DVI cables, Windows 7 and Vista but the result is the same. However after the Windows is fully loaded (HDD led stops blinking) if I pull out my DVI cable from video card and plug it back I get normal desktop view, but to do it every time when Windows loads is not normal solution of this problem.

Any ideas?

P.S. With VGA cable connection via DVI-VGA adapter everything is ok.

Hello!
I have too exactly the same problem :D But other system config.

Tests:

  • win7RC1x64 and win7Build7229x64
  • using latest nVIDIA x64 driver for win7
  • In safemode works everything normal

Having the same DVI issue

See System Specs below:
I am having the same problem with a Chaintech Nvidia GeForce 6600GT video card with 1 DVI and 1 VGA port.

Monitor is an ASUS LCD with DVI, VGA, and HDMI.

OS is Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100 X64

DVI works fine during post and setup of windows. The Windows 7 splash screen even works, however once that is done the Monitor posts a "no DVI connection" message.

I have downloaded the latest Windows 7 drivers from Nvidia for this card and it still doesn't work.

I have check to make sure that it isn't the monitor by attaching it via DVI to another Windows 7 system with an onboard DVI connector and it works without issue.

This definitely has something to with the Nvidia card in my opinion.

If anyone finds an answer, please post.

There is a simple solution to your answer, unfortunately you might need 2 monitors to do it. =( Most video cards DO have 2 outputs, but untill recently a lot of them had 1 agp out and 1 dvi. Well when they started all that, the agp was labled as the first monitor, and the DVI was monitor 2 (always by default). Ok so you have 2 options my bad, you either have to install windows with the DVI plugged in, or hook up 2 monitors at boot. Once you boot into windows configure your seccond monitor to be monitor 1 and your 1st to be the seccond work space. Now when you boot it won't go black, it's really going blank because windows tells the driver to turn off second unused dislplay because it's not configured. =) hope that answeres things, I know this because I used to do duel monitors as well as TV out, and all of them have to be configured just right. If you want TV for main you have to switch it in windows, vice versa for everything else

I also have the same issue with my Geforce 8800GT - screen goes blank right as loading drivers when using DVI (I have both an Asus and Fujitsu monitor). Using a vga adapter fixes it.

This thread Black Screen on Windows 7 - Using nVidia and DVI cable suggests one possible solution. I think for now I'll just stick to the vga adapter until new drivers are released.

I am using Win7 Ultimate x64 RC1.

No seriously, most cards have a Monitor 1 and Monitor 2, if monitor 2 is not enabled it always goes black in windows. switch monitor 2 for primary

http://kb.worldviz.com/articles/916

Instead of attached, set to primary!!! really it's not that hard

Problem Solved

I can confirm the post at Black Screen on Windows 7 - Using nVidia and DVI cable solved the issue.

Basically the current drivers (190.62 or 190.38) will not work. Uninstall in safe mode, download and install version 182.50 and DVI will be available again.

Anyone with the same issue of DVI not working on Windows 7 with latest nvidia drivers should try this. Ignore mushroomboy's comments, they are completely irrelevant and unhelpful.
